With all the new rules and no fuel stops, do you think this will make F1 boring to watch. With all the new areodynamics etc... the cars cant even operate in close proximity to each other so how will they overtake?

Mind you this may make for a nice power nap on the ocuch on a Sunday afternoon. ;)

I lost interest last year - and it hasn't picked up yet. I just don't have the inclination to watch anymore. :(

F1 wasn't ever really an overtaking powerhouse - since the focus was largely on technical advancement and relatively open regulations. If you look at spec series such as NASCAR and IRL, the focus is much more on the driver. I have recently watch an event in both the mentioned series and they have LOADS of overtaking. But not much to satisfy the more technically inclined.

With the tightening of the regulations we should really see more overtaking, but at the price of being at the top of technological advancement. The reason, I believe, we are not seeing the desired effect the OWG (Overtaking Working Group) aimed for is badly written regulations that are too specific. If we look at the 2009 change to the rear wing, making it higher, smaller and less elements. The effect of this should have been a significant reduction in downforce. Instead, teams developed the double diffuser, regaining all the lost downforce and making overtaking even MORE difficult. The diffuser will be banned for 2011 and the smaller wing will be retained. If the regulations are written properly to prevent teams from using other devices to gain downforce, we should really be seeing cars following each other and overtake.

Another problem is the extremely monotonous tracks dreamed up by Herman Tilke in countries with goverment money and no real interest in F1. Look at Turkey - pretty awesome track, but no crowd to speak of. Compare that to last years atmosphere at Silverstone...

Until then, we should hope for rain at every single race this season. Because that is the only way I can see this season being mildy exciting.

Simple and i know how to make f1 the most exciting sport known to man. Get some rain machines at all the tracks. Play GOD during the races and quali for epic racing.

Now that would make it interesting :p

I stopped watching when Mika Hakkinen ended his career. I've tried following a season once or twice after that, but *meh*.

I've touched Mika's winning car for 2000 and I've seen Schumi's car for the same year been showboated on track by their test driver, Luca. Incredible experience... but it's become lame to me in the last 8 years.

Very nice guy - met him and DC last year at a Mercedes open day. Didn't like him in 98 and 99 since he was competing against Schu :)

I think they should have rolling starts or a old le man style start where the drivers have to run to their car, strap in and then start racing.

:D

I also used to be an F1 fan but whe Schumi hung up his boots (or should that be steering wheel?) I lost interest. Even when he rejoined I wasn't interested because it seems that the focus in F1 has shifted from the drivers to the technology/cars used... the teams with the biggest budget are the teams who win.

Now if the scientists hurry up and invent anti-gravity racing with weapons (see wipEout), and F1 switches to that format, then I'd be watching every race.

F1 has always been boring. It's always been about the team with the best tech, and not the drivers.

F1 is not boring to me. I love the technology behind the scenes. It places value on engeneering talent and development. It influences the technology in everyday road cars eventually. The on track action so far this season has been awesome, even the dry Malaysian GP was great to watch.

I couldn't stand him. Even back when he was racing for Benetton. Before Mika I was a Damon Hill fan. :o

I still think the 30mil cap the FIA wanted to put on the teams was a good idea.

Give them 30mil with little restrictions. Its more difficult for engineer to design something with a budget than an unlimited budget as with Ferrari and Toyota. Just think of the cars they can build with very little restictions, the cars will prob look different as well. Every one follow the same principle because the rules can be applied/bend only so far.

Why not just tell the teams ok, the car must be in this weight range, more or less this big, can look like anything and must not have a engine capacity of say more than 3000cc. If they can add electronic devices within the budget go for it.

This will make F1 a completely different ball game.

+30mil
And do the same with downforce specs. "You are allowed to have 1000N of downforce. How you get that - we don't care, as long as it doesn't cause you to go out of budget".

They can even say look if you want to use a kia picanto 1.1 engine with 15 turbochargers go for it. F1 should be about innovation not unlimited budgets.

Wow, seems there are a few of us around :p
There have been days when I thought I was the only one lol.

JM Fangio, Jackie Stewart, Nikki Lauda, Gilles Villeneuve, Damon Hill, Mika Hakkinnen and now Lewis Hamilton... my all time favourites.

How old are you? Good lord i was not even a thought when fangio was racing, nor jackie stewert. Gilles OMS you must be like 60 or 70 dude.

I am not even certain they have decent footage of fangio racing. Black and white surely?
