Fernando Alonso believes it is "incredible" that Formula 1 teammate Stoffel Vandoorne is already having to serve penalties following another Honda engine problem in Russia.

Vandoorne, whose start of the season has been plagued by reliability issues, is the first driver who will have to serve an engine-related penalty this year after suffering another problem in second practice on Friday.

The McLaren driver will need his fifth MGU-H and fifth turbocharger of 2017, meaning he will drop 15 places on the grid in Sunday's race.

Teammate Alonso admitted he was feeling sorry for Vandoorne, who he labelled as a "super driver".

"It's incredible that you have to be penalised in the fourth race," said Alonso.

"I'm sorry for him because he's a super driver and a super talent, and he's having a difficult start in Formula 1, but let's hope he's lucky and we can both be close to the points."

Alonso, who is yet to finish a race this season, admitted he is not expecting the situation to improve over the need few races.

If you didn't recognise it you are not set up to use it - but has not buffed for me in 2 days of watching so far.

edit: or should I say it buffers fine first time - no constant buffering.

Something is wrong with those Mercedes cars - they obviously need the sandbags for ballast, without them they have no road holding.
This will be Ferrari's weekend, Mercedes will be lucky to see the podium at this rate.
