I propose that next year whoever is driving the leading Honda Powered Car be the designated Safety Car.
Even Flat out it is slow enough to bunch up the field but is faster than the Safety car and is expendable.

A ban is not needed, especially not retrospectively, disqualified from the race would be sufficient to appease most and would open up the championship without granting a hefty points lead to Hamilton.
 
I remember Rossi getting his points deducted for the race for knocking his opponent of the bike in 2015 and he was made to start the next race from the back of the grid. That eventually lost him the championship but fans were fine with that and never resorted to booing him.

It was adjudged a racing incident by the stewards caused by a genuine mistake.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have escaped further punishment after their collision on the first lap of the Spanish GP resulted in both Mercedes cars crashing out.

After Rosberg overtook the pole-sitting Hamilton off the line, the pair clashed as world champion Hamilton strove to regain the lead at Turn Four.

Both drivers were summoned to face the stewards after the race but escaped without punishment with their clash adjudged to have been a racing incident.

"He made a mistake and started in the wrong engine setting," said Hamilton. "Before the race we have to pick which engine setting and there is only one, maximum power, and he hadn't gone to that. So he derated at that point and it meant that he lost about 180 bhp.

No Polish wont cry, after all I did mention "Honda" and "Lead" in the same sentence, no one else has managed that this year :)

Baku is the exception to the safety car rule compared to the other tracks in that the run from the last corner to the pit entrance is so long. They should look at creating an exit point for the safety car closer to the last corner for it to get off the track sooner.

Or just make them do a standing start.
They have that in the rules for next year already, at lest following a rain delay, not sure about other red flag conditions.
If the Safety car is too dangerous for the track then a red flag and standing start would be safer and more fun for us.

Vettel's new enquiry set for next Monday.

The FIA has launched a formal investigation into whether further action should be taken over Sebastian Vettel's collision with Formula 1 title rival Lewis Hamilton in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Amid suggestions motor racing's governing body was not satisfied with the 10-second stop-go penalty handed to Vettel after he turned into Hamilton as they prepared for a safety car restart while angry at what he felt had been a brake test, the FIA confirmed on Wednesday that the situation will be re-examined.

A FIA statement said: "Following the recent incident at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in which car #5 (Sebastian Vettel) was involved in a collision with car #44 (Lewis Hamilton), on Monday July 3 the FIA will further examine the causes of the incident in order to evaluate whether further action is necessary.

"A statement regarding the outcome of this process will be made available before the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix."

FIA analysis of Hamilton's telemetry in Baku confirmed he did not brake test Vettel, while Vettel did not accept he had done wrong in the immediate aftermath of the race.

Last season Vettel escaped being hauled up in front of the FIA's International Tribunal for having used foul language against F1 race director Charlie Whiting during the Mexican Grand Prix.

Right now I'm watching F1 for the championship. What Vettel did was horrific, but banning him or deducting points will ruin the championship. No point in watching Hamilton being followed by the rest for two hours.

Someone made the point elsewhere that if Vettel is disqualified and Hamilton then moves up that position they end up on equal points going into Austria.

That would make for a spicy championship going further...

Wouldn't it be nice if we could lay the rules aside when the points dictate it. While we're at it, let's allow hand ball if you're trailing... or ban scoring if you're in the lead. :D
 
Slightly off topic /

One of the ideas that I would love to se make it to implementation is a non championship scoring weekend where teams get to test new ideas like different qualifying formats , Race on Saturday followed by reverse pole , Fastest lap awards , lap lead etc ... basically an independent experimental version weekend were teams and the F1 owners can experiment without having an influence on the Championship in progress.

Who would pay for all that if it has no bearing on the championship? Just playing devil's advocate, its not a bad idea at all
