From PlanetF1.com. Surely his return must be now more than just hopeful speculation?!

Kubica to drive RS17 in post-Hungarian test

Robert Kubica has been confirmed for the upcoming post-Hungarian GP test, handed the driving duties by Renault for Day Two.

Last month the Polish driver took part in a private test with his former team, putting in the laps in a 2012-spec E20 at Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo circuit.

He was back behind the wheel of the E20 weeks later, the early July test taking place at Paul Ricard.

Having shown his pace, Kubica will now step onto the Formula 1 stage for his first competitive public outing in a F1 car since suffering life-changing injuries in a rally crash in 2011.

“The first two days of testing allowed both Robert and ourselves to gather a great amount of information,” said Renault managing director Cyril Abiteboul.

“The upcoming session with the R.S.17 at the Hungaroring will allow us all to obtain detailed and precise data in a current car and representative conditions.

“After this test, we will carefully analyse the collected information to determine in what conditions it would be possible for Robert to return to competition in the upcoming years.”

DAMS Formula 2 driver Nicholas Latifi will drive the car on the first day of testing.

Mercedes quits DTM for Formula E

https://www.pitpass.com/59726/Mercedes-quits-DTM-for-Formula-E said:
In a shock move, Mercedes has announced that it is to leave DTM after 26 years for Formula E.

The move comes as part of the Stuttgart giant's repositioning of its motorsport activities. The company will conclude its participation in DTM at the end of 2018 and enter Formula E in the 2019/20 season.

I actually glanced at the calendar to make sure it wasn't April.
Certainly an endorsement for Formula-E and it could be good for F1 in the long run.
If the manufacturers see Formula-E as the road relevant series thay may well stop forcing artificial road relevance on F1.

I think it's clear you're not going to win anything with a lawnmower engine. I think McLaren need to get their eish together because I don't want to be a ferrari supporter forever.

Would be so awesome if this happens:

Renault have said Robert Kubica's appearance in next week's Hungary Test will allow them to analyse whether "it would be possible for Robert to return to competition in the upcoming years".

But could the Pole be racing for them as soon as next month?

German newspaper Bild claim that if Kubica matches the pace in Renault's 2017 car he showed in two private tests in a 2012 car, and he meets the FIA's requirement of getting out of the car within five seconds in an emergency, then he will replace Jolyon Palmer at the Belgian GP. Interesting times ahead for DTM.

This year they reduced the size of the field to 18-cars (6 from each manufacturer) from 24, in the process 4 teams left the series.

However, they are set to change their formula for 2019 where they will adopt the Japanese GT500 formula. 2.0 litre 4 cylinder twin-turbos in place of 4 litre V8s, so that may entice new manufacturers. Toyota currently compete in the Japanese GT500 series and Toyota has a racing presence in Germany; Toyota Motorsport GmbH who ran Toyota's F1 program.

The argument for the Halo is that it would have saved Justin Wilson and Henry Surtees but neither of them were driving F1 cars.

Henry Surtees was killed at Brands Hatch on 19 July 2009 in a GP2 (F2) car at so that at least is within their jurisdiction even if the track is not f1 certified.

Justin Wilson was killed in an Indy car at Pocono Raceway on 23 August 2015, which is not even an FIA sanctioned sport.

If they were identical to F1 cars, and on the same circuits, I would agree but to force an unpopular "Feature" on such thin evidence is just making excuses for an administrative blunder.

Another valid point was that MotoGP isn't looking at roll cages, etc for the bikes. It's a dangerous sport. I'm all for safety improvements, but this feels like Bernie pulling strings unofficially.
