A hamster in a wheel would be a better option for McLaren right now than the current Honda powerplant. The Renault has been showing encouraging signs, particularly in the hands of the Hulk.

Agreed. Honestly, they should take the Civic Type-R engine and slap that in. Not enough V-Tec is why they have an issue.

Alonso responds to Alex Rossi's IndyCar call

/Popcorn Time :crylaugh:

Indy 500 winner Alex Rossi believes Fernando Alonso would return to his winning ways if he joined IndyCar, and the Spaniard offered a facetious response to the call.

With no winning package in sight for next season, Alonso's future in F1 is now clearly in doubt. The Spaniard recently said that he would consider all options for 2018, including a move to IndyCar which he sampled at Indianapolis this year.

Andretti Herta Autosport's Alex Rossi, who also drove for Marussia Manor in F1 in 2015, insists Alonso should make IndyCar his new home next season.

"I think that Fernando wouldn’t have any struggles adapting," said Rossi.

Past 'history' will block Mercedes move for Alonso - Wolff
"We saw that at Indianapolis, but I think what he would be continually surprised by, as I was, just how good the guys in this championship are and how one tiny mistake – whether it’s from driving or setup direction – could cost you a tenth (of a second) and could literally be the difference between (running) fifth or 12th.

"We see that every single session, every single weekend and I think that’s pretty crazy.

"I think it would be massive for the championship. "We saw the response that we got from him coming to the 500 and obviously there’s more of a global reach that race has versus other races on the schedule.

Alonso read Rossi's comments which were relayed by IndyCar's Twitter account. His response came in the form of a humorous GIF.

We interpret it as a sign that the two-time world champion is indeed contemplating a full-time IndyCar ride in 2018.

But what do you think?

Formula 2 unveils 2018 car at Monza

XPB_901217_HiRes1-725x500.jpg

As scheduled, the FIA Formula 2 series pulled the covers off its halo-equipped 2018 car at Monza today.

The new car, which complies with the latest F1 safety standards, features architecture typical of a modern F1 car and a 3.4 litre turbo-charged Mecachrome engine, which delivers 620 HP at 8,750 rpm.

The design philosophy was to refresh the car to mirror the latest updates in F1 design, and to maintain a long tradition of wheel to wheel racing.

The new machine is also the first new car to be revealed featuring the Halo system, which was incorporated at the final stage of the design process.

FIA set to impose 'Halo' in Formula 2 in 2018

"The unveiling of the 2018 FIA Formula 2 car is an important moment for the FIA as we complete the single-seater pyramid from Karting right through to the pinnacle of motor sport in the FIA Formula One World Championship," said the FIA's Charlie Whiting.

"The plan for a more structured junior formula ladder is designed to feature cars that better prepare drivers for the next step.

"For Formula 2, that means we needed a car that will not only educate, but will also allow the drivers that are most ready for Formula One to shine brightest.

"The car has been developed to include improved aesthetics, as well as bringing the safety level up to the highest standards for single-seater cars – and to ultimately bring it closer to a modern Formula One car on both of these points."

Bonne nouvelle pour @Charles_Leclerc qui pilotera la @SauberF1Team en FP1 en Malaisie ! Devraient suivre USA, Mexique, Brésil et Abu Dhabi !

Translated: Charles Leclerc will drive for Sauber in FP1 sessions in Malaysia, Austin, Mexico, Brasil and Abu Dhabi !

I would say that my earlier prediction of Leclerc joining Sauber in 2018 is pretty much confirmed now :)

So they finally looked under the engine cover and saw that aluminium thing with ICE stamped on it?

Mercedes denies oil burn rule influenced its F1 engine use strategy

https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/131568/mercedes-denies-it-had-oil-burn-engine-strategy

Mercedes insists new oil burn restrictions did not influence its decision to bring its final engine of the 2017 Formula 1 season to the Belgian Grand Prix.

Spa was the last race where engines could run at a higher oil burn level before a tightening that would apply to any new engines introduced from this weekend's Monza event.

Mercedes introduced its fourth engines in Belgium, and the FIA clarified that it would therefore be allowed to keep burning 1.2 litres of oil per 100km with for the rest of the season, while Ferrari would have to run at a lower 0.9l per 100km for its final engine.

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff was adamant the decision was taken because the team wanted a performance boost from developments introduced in Belgium, not because of oil burn.

"It was completely blown out of all proportion," said Wolff about the oil burn saga.

"The reason we introduced it early was in order to bring some performance to the track, with the risk of having to do many [more] races until the end of the season than our direct competitors.

"Also you lack time for further development. The longer you wait for the last introduction of engine the more you can probably add the upgrade.

"These are the reasons we brought it and not in order to extract a performance advantage out of the capability of burning more oil.

"So if you ask the FIA, you will be quite interested to see what the results are."

Sources have suggested that Mercedes' Spa engines ran below the 0.9l per 100km level during the Belgian GP, so would have complied with the new restriction anyway.

Although Ferrari was caught by surprise by Mercedes' decision to introduce a new engine in Belgium - having been under the impression that its rival would not do so - it insists has no major problem with the matter.

Team principal Maurizio Arrivabene said: "First of all we have no conflict, and I don't want to comment on this type of thing.

"Mercedes has introduced early one engine, which also has disadvantages during the course of the season as it has no developments left."

Autosport understands that Ferrari's final engine could appear at the Malaysian GP, but only when it has passed reliability tests at Maranello.

There are suggestions that the updates will provide a good step in performance, but there remain some concerns about its longevity.

Arrivabene dismissed suggestions that Ferrari was delaying its introduction in light of the oil burn ruling so it can continue running at the old 1.2-litre per 100km limit for longer.

"It is nothing to do with that," he said.

"We had a plan at the beginning of the year and we would like to introduce power unit number four at the right time with the right power.

"This is the answer. It is nothing to do with the oil."

Rsg formula 1 talk, said the problem is not the engine but something else, they are now working on these something else
I'm keen to hear more if you come across anything. I get the feeling Alonso is upbeat too... but then they were at the beginning of this year.

So the something else is the whining noise.
It has been identified as coming from McLaren so Honda will move to Toro Rosso thereby eliminating the source of their problem.

It is peeing down in Monza.
The GP3 Quali is behind the safety car right now. (Edit: Canceled due to track conditions)
Not sure we will get a FP3 but Quali should be interesting on a wet track.
