F1 - General discussion and 2017

Bottas finishes his race simulation. That's 80 laps in total for him today.
Mercedes have a combined total of 146 laps for the day!

Stoff returns to his run programme with an install lap. He's back in the garage feeding back to the team before going again. #F1Testing

70 minutes to go then on Day Two here, with at least two three teams set to finish the day with over 100 laps on the board.

Red Bull probably won't, Verstappen is only on 61, but it's been a more productive day for the would-be Mercedes challengers after two separate reliability glitches yesterday.

It's been Williams and, once again, McLaren who have suffered the biggest disappointments today.

It hasn't been a particularly impressive few days for Red Bull, but Daniel Ricciardo still believes his team can beat Mercedes this season.

"We can beat them," the Australian told Sky Sports News HQ. "We've got the same set of rules as everybody else so there's no reason why we can't across the course of the season.

"Mercedes can, as they have the past few seasons in Winter Testing, come out strong and reliable, which I think we all expected. The rules are different, but they're not so different that Mercedes were going to drop from first to fifth.
"We expected them to be quick - we're still not sure how quick we are or how quick Ferrari are."

Kvyat moves ahead of Magnussen for sixth with another soft-tyre run in the Toro Rosso.
His 1:23.081 is narrowly behind Bottas' time.

MORE LAPS FOR BOTTAS!
He might've done a race simulation already, but Bottas has been sent out again by the team. He's working for his money today!

Just shows what I said earlier, first impressions are 2 teams at the front, the others squabbling somewhere behind...

(Ignoring Bottas who seemed to be doing more endurance running than high speed today).

McLaren are looking awful...

The chequered flag falls and we are exactly halfway through the first Test.

What have you made it so far? The easiest conclusion to make is that Ferrari and Mercedes have been very, very impressive. And McLaren, erm, haven't.

Final wrap of day 2:

  • Raikkonen fastest by 0.023 seconds (soft tyre lap).
  • Hamilton set time on super soft tyre.
  • Bottas complete first race simulation of the test, completing 101 laps in only the afternoon session.
  • Magnussen, Raikkonen & Bottas all clock 100 laps.
  • Another power unit replacement for McLaren. Vandoorne only competes 40 laps.
  • Stroll spins for Williams after twelve laps. Lack of spare parts ends their test early.
  • Power unit change for Sauber in morning session.
  • Renault complete only a couple of laps in a troublesome morning session.

Ferrari will have enjoyed today, coming out ahead of Mercedes, even if it was by the smallest of margins.
Setting over 100 laps two days in a row will give them a lot of confidence.

MCLAREN ON THE OTHER HAND..

It was another troubling day for the Woking based team, who were forced to change the power unit for a second time in two days.

This was not the way they wanted to start things off, and will be looking to iron out the problems as soon as possible.

some HD Fan Footage - they don't sound so bad:

Depressing watching Mclaren struggle like this. At some point they're going to have to cut their losses with Honda.
