F1 - General discussion and 2017

Feckers made me sad, when they said the race is on at 5:30. Woke up at 7, crying, only to realise thats when the race starts. :D

Goddamn Supersport. I knew I couldn't watch the race live this morning so I checked on Friday what time they'd be rebroadcasting it. TV guide (on their site) said 15:00 on Supersport 7. Started at 13:30 and I only found that out by chance. Ended up missing the first 16 laps.

Regardless, looks like we may have an excellent scrap on here between Ferrari (well, Vettel) and Mercedes. Lack of overtaking was disappointing but that being said, Australia has never been an overtake fest anyway. Cars look amazing in full race mode.
 
The almost complete lack of overtaking was a bit meh, I hope we see a bit more seb/lewis action that isn't contrived due to a dog slow Red Bull in the future too..

Roll on the rest of the season.
 
Yeah, no sign that following is any easier than last year. In fact quite the opposite. Mercedes should really have kept Lewis out until Vettel was right on his tail - at least until he could come out in clear air. Maintaining track position is 9/10ths of winning. I did chuckle when they suggested plan B to him - as if he could somehow make up over 20 seconds plus by putting on fresh boots. He would have lost his place to Bottas and possibly even Kimi.

I made that exact comment while watching it, the overtake near the end involving Alonso was the most noticeable overtake of the race and counted for almost nothing.

Procession comes to mind as a description for today, hopefully it improves on the tracks where overtaking is a bit more of a possibility.

Exactly - the Alonso incident was down to 1) driving for McDonalds 2) he had a tech issue.
The only way to sort it would be to ban the rear diffuser and enforce bog standard rear wings IMO.

Well i nearly missed the race, after SS said race starts at 5:30am.. only to wake at 7 and in time.
 
Vattel found it easier to sit on Hamiltons tail than Hamilton did on Vattel's, so it is too early to say that following is harder as we have a sample of two and a result of 50/50.
Maybe the Ferrari generates greater turbulence or the Merc has a bad front wing design, only time will tell.

As for overtaking, Albert Park has always been notoriously bad for overtaking and again we have a sample of one.
Double header in two weeks and both tracks allow for more overtaking opportunities than Albert Park, so let's save that until we have 3 races to look at.

The only conclusion we can draw so far is that Ferrari were sandbagging, as we thought, but maybe Mercedes weren't.

Just my 2c worth :)

But even as the commentators said at one point, Verstappen was catching Kimi at one stage really quickly but it would come to nothing when he got into the dirty air, and that seemed to be exactly what happened...

I'm hoping for more in the season, but I was disappointed in today, as Magick says, the changes seem to have had the opposite effect from what was expected.

I really hate processional type races...

And Kimi was also in a Ferrari so all we know is that the Ferrari is difficult to close with.

I hear you but lets give the season a chance.
At least we have a season start even if it was a disappointing race.
Things can only get better.

Im not sure how it was a disappointing race. Ferrari won, and Mercedes still came in a strong 2 and 3. Max still challenged Kimi, and there was terrific battle between Alonso and i think Hulkenburg and one other later on. This cannot be disappointing, as we what we have witnessed in the last 2 seasons

Round and round like a scalextric.

You realise that without the super slow Red Bull getting in the way it would have been the same 1-2-3-4 from the start to the finish?

Well what more do you want? Same as last few seasons? Its the 1st race of the season, so not sure why you are concerned this early on
 
The first race of a new era is always cautious. The engines will get turned up as the season progresses.

Except the cars already looked quick, at least the Mercs and Ferraris do, the problem I'm hoping we won't see is them not being able to get right behind and then passing the car in front of them.

The Red Bull with a full tank looks like a dog, and yet the Merc couldn't even follow right behind it...

The three newest colours on the grid and they almost look like a staged shot, the colours are so coordinated.
