They should swap seats.
Kimi is so laid back that if the Honda packed up he probably wouldn't notice till the Engineer told him he had stopped.
 
Alonso is done.

1) If Vettel wins the WC he stays and Kimi stays too regardless they do not win the CC.
2) If Vettel does not win the WC it means Merc won it and are happy with the lineup so they won't need him. Red Bull is okay for the next few seasons. If Kimi has to be replaced then someone like Perez will replace him not Alonso as the salary bill will become too high.
3) Renault might take Alonso as both drivers are wasting the car. I bet Alonso can finish ahead of 6th in the Renault.

If Mclaren hadn't divorced Mercedes Alonso would be in contention to win the 2017 WC.

Marko threatens Red Bull exit over engine rules

Red Bull motorsport boss Helmut Marko has once again suggested the team will leave Formula 1 if they continue to be "blackmailed" over the engine rules.

Red Bull have struggled to keep up with Ferrari and Mercedes this season partly due to their Renault-powered, TAG Heuer branded engine being way off the pace.

And while new bosses Liberty Media are looking at ways to improve the sport from 2020 and beyond, Marko wants to see a "simple" idea implemented or else Red Bull could well withdraw from the World Championship.

"The idea is very simple. We want an engine that is 1000hp, with a single standard KERS and battery, and development does not cost more than 15-20 million," Marko told El Confidencial.

"They should have sound, and allow the driver to make the difference. And independent companies like Ilmor and Cosworth should be able to enter so that we or McLaren can use them if we want."

Marko was then asked whether Red Bull could pull out from Formula 1 altogether.

"Yes," he said, "because last year Mercedes would not give us an engine, neither would Ferrari, and Renault was only forced by Ecclestone to give us one.

"We want to have an equal situation where we are not blackmailed by a manufacturer."

Wolff not saying ‘no’ to Alonso but…

Toto Wolff says he is not writing off Fernando Alonso joining Mercedes in 2018 but adds that other drivers, most notably his current line-up, have priority over the Spaniard.

With McLaren-Honda once again under-performing, many Formula 1 fans would like to see Alonso join Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes for a 2018 title tilt.

That, though, looks unlikely to happen.

“Of course you’d have to evaluate it, you cannot say ‘no’ in advance, that would be stupid,” Wolff said in an interview with El Mundo Deportivo.

“But the real situation is that there are other drivers who have priority over Alonso.

“And right now Valtteri and Lewis are the number one priority.

“We are happy with our junior drivers and there are other drivers that I also like.

“Fernando is part of that group, but nothing more.”

The team boss revealed that he had been speaking with Alonso on a “regular basis” and met up “at the races” but that it was something he did with “many other drivers.

“There was a general conversation about the situation, an exchange of information, how he saw the situation, how we saw him, how his contract was, but it never went future.

“A contract was never negotiated.”

Wolff added that Alonso’s previous issues with Hamilton would not play a role in his decision as he believes the Spaniard is a different person today to who he was back in 2007.

“I think a driver always accepts a challenge, and Fernando would be a challenge,” he added.

“But it’s much more than just Lewis feeling right with Fernando.

“The whole dynamic of the team is important and you have to take into account the personalities and the character of each one.

“Everything has to fit, but I think Fernando is a different person to how he was in the past.”
