Facebook improves its messaging service

Didn't Google also say email isn't a modern messaging service? But failed to create something new (Google Wave)? I doubt that anyone would want to move away from email as it is today, unless there are some major improvements... just my opinion :)

Wave was a major improvement. That doesn't matter though if the existing standard is as entrenched as email is.

But Facebook says e-mail will be just one component of its plans. CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the company doesn't believe e-mail is going to be a modern messaging system.

There is a lot of room for improvement. :-) At this point I would just be glad if there is a system in place which prevents people from writing inappropriate messages and/or boring messages on people's walls. It is an annoying "look-at-me" tool. Why do people feel the need to write birthday messages on a person's wall? It is like going to a person's birthday party and telling everybody there except the host "happy birthday".

Seriously? It was crap. It was nice from a toy perspective. They might have right idea about collaboration, but from a "just use it, it feels natural" perspective Google Wave scored 0/10.

This clever bastard(facebook ceo) -- I wonder what new ideas his team has come up with...I won't be surprised if they pull a google and start entering whatever market they want because they have the money to do. Might as well enter the fish market, always money in that.

For some reason I cannot stand the idea of Facebook taking over my communications.

New & different things do tend to have that effect on people.

For it to be usable and not a toy it would have to have wide-spread adopting, which is very difficult given the entrenched standard.

From a conceptual and technical perspective it was superior to email in every way. If email were introduced today with an existing standard in place email would have been judged a junior school science fair project.

You missed the point of 'social' networking methinks... If you don't like it, don't use it. If you can improve it, go for it. Stick to emailing. I think it suits you better.

I definitely don't want ads in my e-mails or Facebook "e-mailish" communications. Some advertisers/products/services may not gel so well with the content or recipient of an e-mail.
