I'm using a second sim card that I have - the verification process sends the SMS and you type in the code on the desktop version when it eventually times out and asks you to input the code.

I saw some comments online saying that if you install it on your desktop it will no longer work on your phone so that's what I'm trying to avoid.
 
I'm not fan of Watsapp so i don't see why facebook should be even considering some competition, ;)
 
It's not linked to your FB account it's tied to your phone number. Actually looks like an interesting one. I see they're also completely rewriting their Android app because...well it sucks.
 
It makes me laugh how, for some, it has apparently become cool to not like Facebook.

Bring it on, I say, the more choices i have for communicating the better.

Always been that way regarding FB, some people going on about how lame it is while wagging their epeens about.

In terms of communications services, more is not necessarily better. I would find it annoying trying to think about who uses which platform. At the moment almost everyone I know uses WhatsApp, so it's a true SMS/IM replacement for me.

You are right about different people on different platforms. But if it becomes successful then no doubt most will be on it. And competition is always healthy :) Whatsapp does seem to be having a lot less downtime recently, which is a good thing.

Me too. It's surprising that GTalk isn't as popular, seeing as it's available on all platforms.

Thought that was a rumour. If they do buy out WhatsApp then I'm sure there'll be a way to integrate existing users, which wouldn't affect me much. What would affect me is installing an entirely new application and trying to convince people to migrate.

GTalk doesn't hook directly into the phone book, which is what I think the appeal of WhatsApp is.

Problem is there is no native client for GTalk on either Windows Phone or iPhone <--- you need to address that 1st.

Personally I love Gtalk above everything as I can continue a conversation started on a phone or tablet on the desktop. The problem is just getting other people to have it "always on" like the Android folk's phones do by default.
 
Give these people your cellphone number at your own peril.

Nowadays I'm even getting automated calls with recorded commercials that begin to play as soon as I answer. It's reaching the point where I think going back to having a pager is a much better idea than a device that anybody can can send messages or voice to.

I also found that concern a little over the top. Whatsapp has your number and has anyone studied their privacy policies? Also most have already provided Facebook with the cell number for security reasons or to access Facebook on their phones.

Well that depends on the way your Facebook is set I guess. Loads of people have their profiles on public also intrusting is the part where the Facebook app on my phone brings all my "friends" phone numbers into my contacts if I select the Facebook contact sync.

That said I still do not think they half as bad as our local banks that give out your cell numbers to partners for spam and this after you clearly indicate that you do not wish to be contacted by their "marketing partners"

I wanna get rid of anything Facebook on my phone and pc.

So happy with WhatsApp.....why try anything else?

Facebook's time has passed. The next big thing is around the corner.
