Facebook has an option to notify you when certain things happen in your account, whether its posting photos, sending messages writing to your wall etc.

One of the options is to send an sms/text message, I have checked it on my CellC phone and it works fine.

The question I can't find an answer to is who pays for the text message that you receive, it would be great if it was Facebook but they don't do it in the USA

Any ideas ?

I never saw charges coming through. Although I never replied to any of the smses - and then it was disabled. It's as if you need to reply (and therefore generate revenue) for your SMS option to remain active.

Thanks for the fast response :-) I only tested it once, never thought that it would expire. The sms that came in was strange, I replied to it but I didn't observe a fb posting or acknowledgement. I am setting up a group and wanted the members to be alerted on postings, not sure that all the members have push notification on their mobiles. The fun of technology !!

I get the felling that it's financed by the networks in the knowledge that many will use the reply option and thus generate revenue.

If no reply is received within (I think it's one month) then you'll get a message saying that the service will be suspended...

Replies go to a +27 number and as far as I am aware the cost is the same as a local SMS...

Thanks :-) I'll test that concept, it might still be worth the fee if we can get the value we need out of the group. The group should last around 12 months and by then I should have found out if its too expensive

We aren't charged, reason US people get billed is because of charges for receiving messages by their operators. Making SMS spam and such far more irritating for them

Amazing, something that our cell operators are getting right. Perhaps because they charge so much for calls it subsidizes these sms ?

In the bad old days here in SA you had to pay to listen to your voice messages!

No hang on you are right. We should ask for refunds ;) Been there since the launch - Motorola 3200 - Good old brick

You need to confirm at "www.smscodes.co.za" on the rating.

This service works on Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Virgin Mobile. Not 8ta :( sigh
