Facebook to build its own processors

It would seem Facebook is getting jealous of what Intel & AMD accomplished with Meltdown and Spectre Capabilities...

To what end? Burn a lot of resources in a non-core area that doesn't generate revenue and end up with a half-arsed thing that barely competes with existing offerings?

well it is kinda suspect coming right after their software is in the spotlight is for sharing info..

first they couldnt figure out how to generate money from this "free" service. now they are a behemoth in big data, which recently got them a slap on the wrist and this caused them to downsize bit

we all know hardware manufacturers have been caught with data collecting capabilities in their products. quick examples would be hp, intel and amd

it seems it takes longer to spot these dodgy dealings in hardware than it does in software.

It will probably significantly reduce their data center footprint and power consumption. Intel, AMD, Nvidia, IBM, ARM, etc. build (reasonably) general purpose processors - if you have a particular application in mind, and enough scale a custom asic can easily make sense.

ah right. I had just assumed general purpose processor. What you say makes sense though.

I guess they probably have enough scale for some kind of AI centric asic

Yeah. For training AI they may want a particular asic, for evaluating it they would want another. For their servers they would want to handle queries quickly, which don't need much floating point math if at all, so they could have a (say) 100 core per socket CPU with no vector unit (currently a huge part of the die is spent on floating point math units on Intel's Skylake severs). Etc, etc.
