I live about 500m away from the exhcange box. i can actually see it from my room window. are there any other factors which may prevent my ADLS account from reaching its 4096 potential max?

i used to have a lovey rock solid 4megs before the 26th Feb, but after a lightening storm the dsl is lucky to hit 1.5 megs :( the techi from telkom eventually arrived today and claimed to have fixed it, but its still not back to its previous glory :-( what else could be stopping it from reaching previous 4 meg highs ??

have you had any other changes on your system?? changed routers? network cable?

Are you connecting wireless or via cable? has your router's bios been flashed/upgraded?

Changed ISP's? what about other users on the same line?

Sorry about all the questions, just trying to help

:)

no problem :-)

no other changes on system
same netgear router as before, no flashing done
same cable setup
same ISP (MWEB)
sale line with no other users

basically, from the time i requested upgrade to 4 meg line, right up until the 25th Feb, everything was aces! 4096 downstream all the time. matter of fact, i did not even KNOW that the neatgear could flash orange!

thunderstorm on 26th. voice line went dead. dsl went patchy. i assumed when they fixed the voice it would resovle DSL issue., but alas twas not to be.

the guy came out today and said something about wires touching at the exchange or bet exchange and house and that me switch me to another set of wires. when my wife checked downstream after he left, it was back up to 4096 and we thought it was sorted. but about 30 ins later, it dropped again and now the sync keeps jumping around. anywhere from 608kps up to 2.8megs but dropping and resyncing all the time :(

Erm..

well it sounds like one of two things here..

either there is damage to the line that you run on, or damage to the exchange box that you connecting to.

both a possible result of the thunderstorm, and both telkom issue IMO

I would call them up again and explain what happened (again) and get someone to take another look. Maybe make a log of how the line is dropping and show the tech dude.

DONT let him leave until the line is solid, or unless he gives you a concrete answer/solution

chances are that the folks next door might have ADSL, ask around if they are having problems that way you can identify if its the exchange box, or something wrong with your line.

Well that's what I would do anyway... :)

thanks dude. how do i check the connection log ? is there a tool that i can use to monitor this connection?

hmmm maybe your router will have a connection log... most of them do, you will just have to do some scratching around! :D
