Failing HDD

I suspect that one of my external notebook drives is failing. Can anybody recommend godd surface scanning / disk checking software?

Ditto for Spinrite.

A tad expensive, but worth it.

Keep in mind that you should keep regular backups should something like this happen.

That >IS< my backup disk.... it's not poked but files I copy off it are sometimes unusable - so I'm guessing I have some bad sectors.

So I'm not looking to do data recovery, just disk analysis. Also, freeware would probably be ideal
