Fake notes frm the ATM

Not unbelievable in the least, but there are controls in place to prevent this from happening. Fake currency is usually limited to those garage shop ATMs, the ones that are not refilled by the bank.

Also, these days cash recycling ATMs exist although I'm not sure how many of them are running in ZA, they check that the currency is valid both when it is withdrawn and deposited, so it would be impossible to get issued fake currency from one of those ATMs.

Say what now?

I withdrew some cash from the Nedbank ATM yesterday around 16:30 only to find out today that some of the cash is fake.. ok, i called the bank but the response wasn't good the person who was assisting me wasn't helpful coz she told me that they dont issue out cash from the ATM.. so i dont know wat to do people

Put the Monopoly money back in the box. :D

no chance - unless you can prove that there are still fake notes inside that atm.

Yeah right...

There was an article about a bank/cash management company employee being arrested for defrauding Absa of over R2m (not sure of exact amount. It could have been more) by replacing real money with fake notes.

I know a guy that worked for a well known cash transport company and he says it is shocking how much money they 'loose' every month.

I got an extra R100.00 from an FNB atm. How come if this machines are flawless?

How long ago? Would they not pick it up when they do reconciliations?

3 months back and it was a cash send transaction. Good for me I don't bank with FNB.

Besides they got fake notes to worry about than to which hunt me for their FLAWLESS ATM's.

Pay attention whenever you withdraw cash inside a filling station's shop, many of those ATMs are the loose, floor standing Sparc ATM models. Those are not operated by any bank at all, they are the property and responsibility of the garage itself. The cash inside also typically comes from the garage tills.

Hence: they very much CAN dispense fake notes and often do when they are refilled with fake notes from the tills by accident / negligence.

All atms even in garages are still branded with a banks logos and contact info, ie they take responsibility for the atm?

i've had a fake R100 note from a nedbank atm one evening.

called nedbank in the morning, they told me to take the note to the reserve bank and make a statement.

i took a different approach, went back to the machine, deposited the note & withdrew another.
called the manager & told her i have returned the note from whence it came - never heard from them again

So then what's the point of the banks branding and hotline details on the atm?

The little that I know about them is that the banks are responsible for technical/client support but the vendor handles loading of cash and all that stuff.

Well done, you still had to do some extra legwork on their part by returning the note, but they can do their own bloody administration.

I received 3 extra 100€ notes from a ATM in Gibraltar. The withdrawal was 300€ and the money came out in different denominations but totalled more than 300€ . It was outside M&S and I went inside and spoke to a cashier. She just waved it away as being of no consequence. There was a long queue at the ATM, at least a 15 min wait
