Hi Guys,

Looking at a few options for a family hatch. Looking at used with low mileage and newer than 2013. I also would like to keep the car for a while (+/- 5 years) so it needs to not fall apart after a few years. So I have narrowed it down to the following that fit into my budget...

  • 2013 Renault meganne 1.4t GT line
  • 2013 Honda Civic Hatch 1.8 elegance
  • 2013 Alfa Giulietta 1.4t progression/distinctive
  • 2014 Hyundai Accent Hatch
  • 2011 BMW 320i (Not a hatch I know but a decent family car and BMW motorplan)

Looking at overall best value in terms of performance, reliability, maintainability, etc

The Renault and Alfa will be very expensive to repair when things go wrong down the line. The Honda is the most reliable car out of the bunch.

I drive a E91 320i myself. It's a great car. Super refined as well as a great comfortable yet sporty drive. The only downside is that it drinks fuel like it has a leak in stop and go traffic.

I cannot comment with regards to the Hyundai.

I've heard good reviews of the Hyundai warranty's and after sales service. Also they are very economical cars. Why haven't you considered Audi or Golf?

I have but from a budget perspective a 2013 Civic with under 40 000km is in the same price range as a 2011 A3 with 70 000km

You won't go wrong with Honda. Very strong reliable cars and I'll take VVTI over TSI any day. It's less complicated to fix than a turbo engine but it's got that oomph.

From that list given the Civic; no offense but that Accent is a k@k option in this context.Rather the i30 possibly then.

The real winners though IMO is the Golf & the Focus.

Purely in terms of reliability :
  • 2013 Honda Civic Hatch 1.8 elegance
  • 2014 Hyundai Accent Hatch
Although you can have that a bit more style if you consider the 1.4t Astra (same engine as the Alfa)

What is your budget money wise? We had a second baby last year and I bought my wife a Nissan Qashqai 1.5DCI Limited Edition 2013 with 40 000km for R196 000. I did get a good deal though, but you have options like the 1.6 petrol as well which is similarly spec'd. Otherwise the 1.5DCI goes for around R240 000.00.

Great value cars.

Alfa service is expensive. R18500 for a major and cambelt. Independent people will do it for R10k (for a V6).

The Honda will be most reliable

I don't think there is anybody that I dislike enough to wish an Alfa on them.

My Dad told me as a kid (I still smile when i think about it now)... "Son; If you want to by a fekking good 2nd hand car - buy a brand new Alfa".

Have you owned or at least driven one? They are amazing but I do agree that I won't recommend one due to being worried that the person won't like me if something goes wrong
