Well it seems like he has a personality. So no need to consider the Golf.

The Golf is the benchmark for good reason though.

My 1st thought on OP's list as to why there is no Golf is that perhaps he wants to "stand out".

Had nothing to do with cool. At the time (2006) the new shape had just been released and it was a very solid vehicle that ticked all the boxes for a family hatchback. And we were not disappointed. Ever.

Have you owned or at least driven one? They are amazing but I do agree that I won't recommend one due to being worried that the person won't like me when something goes wrong

I have personal experience with Alfa. They are beautiful cars when they go but you know sooner rather than later it is going to the workshop.

Depends on the real likes dislikes.

Civic rear doors are not as accessible and the boot might also not be as good as the Golf's but I haven't compared the new ones directly.
