My Mac laptop has suddenly started playing up fan wise. Keeps coming on but nothing showing active on the monitor?

Macbook takes forever to switch on?

Often have to switch it off due to it freezing and pics going squiggly. But, switching on is a headache?
I get the light grey screen with the logo and the spinning grey spoke wheel but not the blue screen with cursor top left and action?
Usually takes an hour and 20 attempts to get it going ?

Have you got your hdd selected as the start up drive?

OOps sorry, forgot to mention that I know buggerall about computers…
Thanks for your prompt responce, how do I know if its selected ?

Ok cancel this one somehow please,
Macbook bought in 2007. Mac OS X 10.6.8

Take it in to a mac repair place, something is overheating and I am just making a guess but could be the heat sink coming loose.

System preferences, Startup Disk. Make sure your hdd is actually selected.

Fan - are you watching a lot of flash movies? I'd check the vents at the rear to see if they've not become clogged over time.

Will do. Is Mackeeper safe to check for errors ? I see it on speedtest.net. My results are ; ping 26 down .88mb up .43mb

If you're running 10.8 start it in recovery mode and use disk utility.

There was nothing selected on startup. I clicked on 'Mac OS X 10.6.8 on the disk Macintosh HD' ? Other options not selected by me were, 'Windows on NO Name and Network startup with a large question mark in the middle. I closed the padlock.?

Or thermal paste. It's a 6yo laptop. Op, what temp is your CPU running at?

Getting there guys… One more thing please. Went to Disk Utility, clicked on Mac HD and got a message, Needs to be repaired. Red writing; Keys out of order, Volume Mac HD corrupt , needs to be repaired etc.
My question is how do I start up using Mac OSX disc? I have 2 discs from when I bought the laptop.Install disc 1 and 2. No idea how to restart with these.
Thanks

Put disc 1 into the drive.
Restart the mac while holding down the "option" (alt) key - it's 2 keys left of the space bar.
Keep holding it down while the mac starts up.
You will then see on your screen = startup options. One will be the mac hard drive, the other will be the mac install DVD.
Select the DVD as startup disc.

Nothing worked, would not repair disc. I have reloaded from scratch with update to Snow leopard. Managed to restore most things I need except Mail which is the most important as it has mailboxes with all my work quotes.
At one stage i saw a blue folder somewhere saying mailboxes but on clicking it , it disappeared? I'm back to 10.6.8.
Yesterday I found 50 ways to restore mailboxes, none of which I understand and would be prepared to tackle. Any shortcut out there?

Thanks for all the help. The patient has been to a Mac store yesterday and its buggered.

Anyone able to quote on repairs on the West Rand ? Istore say a minimum of 10 days which usually goes to 3 weeks.
