Does anyone know of any independent Mac repair technicians in South Africa?

My 2009 Macbook has serious performance issues resulting from a faulty Ethernet port which is attached to the Logic Board.
Formal Apple Technicians will refuse to repair, only replace the whole motherboard, which would cost more than replacement value of the computer itself.

The only independents I know of is iFix, whom I am awaiting an email reply from.

Suggestions? :)

You MacHeads have been conned into thinking you pay for a decent service but fsck me you okes are so stupid!

hey, i have just read the next 2 posts.

Three times!

Sis on both of you!!!!

@Venomous - re your 'possible useful comment' that I read before you deleted it regarding seeking someone who can do low level repairs :p Thanks, I guess thats the kind of technician I have in mind. It's just a matter of finding someone who isn't averse to Macs. From reports overseas, there are guys about known to be able to repair Mac logic boards, rather than just follow the apparent Apple doctrine of replacing rather than fixing.

Respectfully my remark that offended you has been deleted. But just in case anyone is curious, It was basically about how "ponder" probably has no friends.

/ considers thread grim in prospects, albeit back on topic

Moklet Kcuf,

I owe you an apology, my behaviour was totally out of line and unacceptable.
I'm not even going to try and justify it with an explanation.

Once again, sorry about this.

Ah damn popcorn removed from thread. Bugger!

Nice of ponder to come to the party though, in the end. However, I can say this: CORE (not apple) is responsible for the con job.

Moklet: I wonder if completely disabling the Ethernet may just sort out the issue at least while you wait for a response from any of these techs.

(1) System Prefs => Network Prefs.
(2) Click on the Ethernet port and then the "-" button at the bottom.
(3) Restart. If performance issue persists, we may have to get a little complex here.

Getting Ugly
(not recommended but if you have proper backups etc and you do not have activated software such as Adobe CS which requires the MACID)

(4) About this mac => more info
(5) Click Ethernet cards on the left then see Kext name and location.
(Will be something like "/System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext")

We are looking for the full KEXT package, ie IONetworkingFamily.kext

(6) Open that folder (Most likely "/System/Library/Extensions/") and drag the KEXT (IONetworkingFamily.kext) to the desktop. This will COPY the kext to the desktop.

(7) Deep breath and "rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext" (or if the name differs, the other name)
(8) Restart.

If you do decide to get the ugly bit done, please be very very careful. Any activated software will probably cease working and you may even be unable to startup again so only do this if you have a working clone. In fact, maybe try with the clone first.

Having re-read my advice, I am still very concerned about the second part. Tell me, are you sure that it is an actual hardware issue and not just failed KEXT support for the hardware? If all you have is the word of the people at Apple, I'd try to at least eliminate other things. Do you have the AHT disk or other startup media that can test the port?

Thanks for the help guys.

I ran a Apple Service Diagnostics test (the same that Apple techies use), reports the Ethernet Controller is faulty. No more specifics.
With ASD comes a reference guide. It says that the Logic Board should be replaced.

@Gregorgy - not sure if your second option may work? Sounds a bit drastic

@Sputnik - thanks for the contact. I have since also been given a lead here in Cape Town, Paarden Island. Will be chasing that up shortly

@ ponder - no worries

Paarden Island, Cape Town, if it is Dennis at "RepairsDotCom" you cant go wrong. Some Apple dealers send problem machines to him.
I had a logic board problem on an old PowerBook, Apple wanted over R4000 to replace it. Dennis did a "board level" repair for under R500 - problem solved.

Yes. it was Dennis that I spoke to. Confusingly ifix only refered the phone number and website- repairs.com which is totally ambiguous.
Strangely though, I ran another hardware test and it reported instead that the hard drive was faulty, not the motherboard. WTF? i have since replaced the hard drive, now my laptop is running like a dream again.

Wont need to call Dennis again, for now

Hi

Looking for 'Official' Apple repair tech/servicing onsite or company -did see the Mac shops list elsewhere on this forum, but difficult to guage who does onsite. -Any suggestions.
Got a list of Apple/Adobe purchases / upgrades that need attention.

Bryanston, Johannesburg.

Please, no apple smart-arse jokes... or non-Apple chancers.

Thanks

Hi Mike

OFFICIAL apple is core and they are in Wingfield Park, near airport

non-Apple chancers I assume means people without certification, in which case you may well be shutting out some of the best minds in the business, myself included.

The closest service centre of any sort that may be what you are looking for is Digicape, who are at the Wedge in morningside, which is not too far from you. Last time I dealt with them, they were okay. Decent guys. Give 'em a call.
