Anyone out there in the Cape Town area who is willing/able to repair a logic board. Machine is a 2011 model so price for new logic board is not worth it. It has been confirmed by 2 technicians that the board it faulty. Machine it totally dead.

First question- what happened to it that caused it to die

Is the logic board or the GPU? I recall that the 2011's had problems with the GPUs and Apple had a recall.

check if if it covered by the recall:
https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
if covered, take to digicape - not istore
(digicape are quick - istore take forever

if not covered:
denis - repairs.com - paarden island
has done a few for me over the years
021 5105517

denis has done the job correctly 1st time every time - all the machines he has done for me are still perfect (last one about 12 months back - oldest, about 4yrs back

I did an update and shut down and restarted. It didn't restart. This is the second time this has happened. Logic board was replaced under warranty the 1st time. Will try repairs.com - thanks for the info.
