Ja, your advice is sound. Timing is bad but the cost of @RedViking link is actually less than I had in mind for an M1, longer term it makes more sense.

Chatting with the Macshack techie yesterday he says they struggle to find parts for the Intel Macs and when they do, prices are crazy. They are not even trading or buying Intel Macs any longer.

Yup unless it's like the crazy horsepower i9 variety it doesn't make much sense.
 
I love how on page 2 of this thread there is not a single suggestion for a non mac replacement, but if the same thing happend on a non mac thread you wont reach page 2 without a mac is sugjested. enforces that apple products is an MLM and apple users are always trying to get more people to buy in.

Ironically I don't have a single apple product. I don't love apple. I just (got to) hate windows. :ROFL: (It's an abusive relationship)

having used all 3, I am most comfortable on Windows. but I am getting close to fed up wiht them.

considering turing one particularly difficuilt laptop into a Linux machine again because Windows is giving enough trouble

I've got a used ( but u/s) 2013 MBA if you want to try the Apple environment out. Even in current status, I think it may be faster with longer battery life than a Windows machine.

Why would you suggest something that will upturn his entire life and require multiple changes to other things as well just to get a simple thing done?

Especially considering he's already mentioned both he and his wife work on Macs.

This constant upgrade cycle to maintain interconnectivity and operational status of all devices gets to me, I have to admit. But Apple is not unique in this extortion. It is the new business model. At least with Apple it works.

I am eyebrow deep in the Apple ecosphere after a tiring and trying Android/Windows derailment in the early 2000s. In the past 12 months I have upgraded my iMac, iPad Mini, cell phone and now this M1. Now I am done for another 8 - 10 years. Maybe.

My wife, sadly, clutches her Galaxy phone to her breast at the slightest mention of upgrading to an iPhone. I may need to arrange a drive-by robbery to alleviate her of it.

I mean it's certainly possible to get all the same things done, but requires a lot more leg work outside of Apple-land.

But to simply suggest flipping the device after years in the ecosystem...simply doesn't make sense or at least means there is a whole lot more to be done than simply buying a PC and therefore makes it a major decision.

You'll never find a Windows laptop for R9k with 15h battery life and only using 30 watts during heavy usage so there's nothing to even suggest in Windows land.

I'm no techie or propeller head but know my way around Apple enough not to have an Apple tech on speed dial. Honestly, with Windows, I wouldn't know where to start. It was that constant fiddling and tinkering and waiting with Windows and Android that sucked up huge amounts of my time and energy.

Things may have changed now, I don't know.

Getting going with the iPhone 16 from my old 13, with all settings, email accounts, printers etc etc transferred and operational, was around 80 minutes. Should be similar getting this M1 running after migrating from my 2017 MBA.

I sukkel with enough other things. I don't want my tools to make things harder on top of that.

because that is what happens in EVERY non apple thread. because apple people are a cult.
