DA blames Lekota for farm killings

Johannesburg - Cope has defended its leader, Mosiuoa Lekota, after attacks by the DA, which accused him of being responsible for criminal attacks on farms after his decision to disband the commando system while he was defence minister.
The DA’s John Steenhuisen made the allegations while campaigning with outgoing Western Cape Premier Helen Zille in Kempton Park last week.

Steenhuisen told supporters the DA had a rural safety strategy that would help fight crime, saying “the truth of the matter is that there was a massive vacuum left in rural safety when the commando system was disbanded under the then minister of defence, Lekota, and we were told there was going to be a new system, but his new system never arrived,” Steenhuisen said.

4 men sentenced to 25 years behind bars for Eastern Cape farm attack

The Eastern Cape High Court in Makhanda has sentenced four men to 25 years behind bars for a March 2017 farm attack in Aberdeen, in the Eastern Cape.

According to police spokesperson Captain Anelisa Feni, 45-year-old Hannes Gouws was shot on his farm, Makateesplaas, and his 14-year-old son Jan-Hendrik was assaulted.

"The 14-year-old fought back and as a result of the scuffle [the men] fled the scene without taking anything from the farm."

Feni said Lwandile Aseni, 24, Zwelakhe Mguzulwa, 37, and Zwelakhe Jaxa, 31, illegally gained entry to the farm. Floyd Ayanda Nkohla, 35, was an employee on the farm at the time of the attack

Feni said investigations revealed that he was the one who supplied Aseni, Mguzulwa and Jaxa with information relating to the farm.

Farm shooting: Probe into killings of man dressed as cop, farm manager

Five men arrived at a Free State farm posing as police officers and moments later one of them and a farm manager were left dead with gunshot wounds.

Police have now launched a manhunt for four suspects as they try to put the pieces together on what could have transpired on Saturday evening.

The farm manager was identified as 37-year-old Janus 'Boeta' Powell, Network24 reported.

Police spokesperson Thando Mbambo said they believed Powell, who managed the Rietvlei Farm in the Hoopstad area, was shot by the "bogus" police officers at about 18:30.

Yeah we heard about that today. Just another brutal day out in the farm areas
Nothing new. As you were..

A very good mate of mine, left the city to move to the quiet and relative safety of Bonnievale a decade ago, two weeks back he was sitting in my lounge lamenting how the place had gone south, every night there were folk clambering around his smallholding taking items...... how unsafe he felt there now.

Anyhow, he is a qualified professional and was back in Namibia to sort out his return to the land of his birth, we expect him to be resident in the land of the sand within the next two months...

I get the feeling that this particular murder is getting so much news because this area has been comparatively pretty safe.... now people that once had the delusion that "these things only happen elsewhere" are shocked. Being in the general geographical area I can say many people are expressing disbelief that people can even do something like that..... it's astounding that this bubble was so long lived that they never really understood the reality of most of the country.... most of them are also DA voters which explains a lot of their wilful ignorance on the matter.
