What gets me is the wilful self blinding by South Africans: "This is normal crime".

No, it's not. It's only as normal as those trying very hard to normalize it. In normal crime, you do what you have to do and get out as fast as possible. You don't take time to torture somebody you had already incapacitated with a stabbing.

Yes, we have abnormal crime levels in South Africa, but this transcends that.

Agreed. But then you get to the other end of the spectrum where sometimes you end up in roughly the same place. It angers me so much (the acts themselves as well as the apathy and even denial) that I end up numbing myself to it to a degree or I'd probably end up going postal.

Yep. Then a Hofmeyr speaks up and get silenced. Government is not interested. The day there is no farmer left they will celebrate with French fizzy drinks.
 
Agreed. Some blonde celebrity's latest tweet garners more interest in the public than people being raped, tortured for fun. Until it's their daughter being gang-raped and sodomized by 5 men. Then they pay attention.
