Minister Didiza reassures Mpumalanga farmers ‘there will not be eviction’ amid tensions​

Farmers in Mpumalanga have appealed to the Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Department to come up with ways of reducing tensions on farms. They made the appeal during a meeting between Minister Thoko Didiza and representatives of their unions in Ermelo.

The aim of the meeting was to discuss issues related to state-owned land leased to farmers. Apparently, some farmers in Mpumalanga received letters informing them that they would be evicted from state farms.

The farmers in question claim that this happened after they refused to pay R250 000 to certain officials in order for their lease contracts to be renewed.

The farmers have urged Minister Didiza to take action against officials accused of corruption. She in turn has assured them that they will not be evicted from the farms.

“There is not going to be any eviction and in any way of actions process in terms of state land, you’ll have to involve the Minister. And in this incident, those letters were not even given out with authorisation of the Minister. So we agreed that there is not going to be any eviction of the farmers we are created in two weeks time the team from the property unit in the Department of Agriculture will come down and all those farmers who have got issues around their leases we’ll meet at the department so that those issues are resolved.”

The meeting comes at a time when tensions continue to rise between farm owners, dwellers and farm workers.

On Friday, four suspects aged between 25 and 53 were arrested for the murder of two Bampoen farm dwellers in Mkhondo. It is alleged that the deceased were part of a group of people that were shot at while trying to rescue one of the farm dwellers who was allegedly kidnapped.

Farmers’ unions say the government should play a more active role when it comes to protecting the rights of the farmer dwellers.

Motsepe Matlala is the president National African Farmers Union of South Africa.

“The Minister is of a view that there is no need for infighting and that ourselves need to seat down with government to identify the real issues so that they can be attended to. The farm owners can not deny the basic rights of people who are staying on the farm. There must be demarcation and farm needs to be divided and there must be an area demarcated for farm dwellers. There must be access for services that need to be rendered for the people on that farm.”

Meanwhile, Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Vusi Shongwe, has urged the police to ensure that the four suspects are not granted bail.

“The issue of Bampoen farm is not for the first time, you will remember that there was a time where there were allegations that the very same farm have poisoned cattle of those dwellers. Now it’s known that they have shot two people and died which as a department we condemn it.”

The four suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday.

From reading numerous Tweets and reading the SABC article it seems the farmers allegedly kidnapped a farm dweller and in the attempt of rescuing the kidnapped farm dweller from the farmers two other farm dwellers was shot dead by the farmers (kidnappers). There is not much of an opposing view other than the allegation that the farm dwellers shot first at the farmers, but no mention of anyone being kidnapped or held for some reason.

The farmers (four) has been arrested and will appear in court tomorrow, a hearing which will also be attended by the community and EFF.

At this time it is the farmers say, the 'farm dwellers' say. More will be known tomorrow, but this is already politically tainted.

A group of men are said to have gone to the farmer to look for work. The farm owner allegedly said they were not welcome.

A Mpumalanga farmer and his son have been arrested for allegedly killing two job seekers and injuring another after a scuffle broke out on a farm when a group of men went to seek seasonal work.

The father and son are part of a group of four suspects, aged between 25 and 53, who are due to appear before the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 12 April 2021.

They are facing two counts of murder and an additional charge of assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm relating to the alleged assault of another man.

This incident happened on a farm in Dirkieskop on Friday.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said the court appearance stems from an incident in which a group of men are said to have gone to the farm owner to seek employment as seasonal workers.

Allegedly the farm owner informed the men that they were not welcome on his premises.

According to Mdhluli, the job seekers then decided to leave the farm, but later realised that one of them had been left behind.

He said they then went back only to find that he was being kept on the farm by the suspects.

Scuffle​

Apparently as the men demanded that they let him go, a scuffle broke out during which two men were reportedly shot and killed at the scene.

Three other men are said to have also sustained serious injuries.

Mdhluli confirmed to News24 that the two men who were murdered were job seekers and that two of the suspects are the farmer and his son.

Police were informed about the incident and upon arrival, they found the two groups and two lifeless bodies, said Mdhluli.

The police opened a case accordingly and immediately began their investigation whereupon the four suspects were arrested said Mdhluli.

Mdhluli said two firearms were also confiscated and they will form part of the investigation.

“The police management in the province has strongly condemned the incident and has since called for calm. They made a plea to members of the public to refrain from using violence in resolving issues.

“A team of experts has already been established to investigate the case. Police has also asked members of the community to allow space for the law to take its course,” said Mdhluli.

Tomorrow is going to be a heated day in and out of the courtroom. I would assume that the other two accused are farm workers of the farmers hence they are not specifically named or identified. Only 2 firearms recovered (or confiscated) from the scene of the crime...

It does happen, and the court does look into the state of mind. I would not assume anything until this matter is heard in court. Circumstances and all that. A lot will be need to be discovered surrounding the reasons of why one of the farm dwellers was held at the location or even if the farm dweller was held, but it could have been for a numerous reason.

As per the SABC article this is a territory in hot dispute due to lease agreements, and I won't be surprised if there are forced occupation going on which does not bode well for trust in that community. Land ownership will always be a point of tension, especially where no clear ownership can be established. A lot of this is state-owned land.

I am also hesitant of calling the farm dwellers the community since everyone there is part of this particular community in the greater context.

If there was murder, do the crime pay the time.

My point is that is very difficult to make assumptions without the circumstances. All what we know at this point is that two individuals of a group was shot dead. Assume bringing a gun to a knife fight, we simply don't know what happened at this time.

Piet Retief farm murder: Two killed in Mkhondo, four farmers arrested

Two Piet Retief residents were reportedly killed by farmers on 9 April. Five suspects were charged with murder and appeared in court.

TWO ‘BRUTALLY KILLED BY FARM OWNERS’​

As reported by Volksrust Online Radio, the incident took place at Ward 10 Pampoen Farm on Friday. The victims have been identified as Mgcini Coka and Zenzele Coka.

“Mgcini Coka and Zenzele Coka have been brutally killed by farm owners where they were trying to rescue other members of the community who came to look for a job”.
Volksrust Online Radio (VOR) explains that residents seeking employment “were beaten as the farmer stated he does not need people of this area to work for him”.

DETAILS LEADING UP TO INCIDENT UNCLEAR​

Several residents have said on social media that Volksrust Radio didn’t “present the real story”. One netizen, Dawid Booysen, accused Volkrust Online Radio of “swiping [sic] up people with wrong info”.

Booysen told another commenter that they were “being led to believe fake news”, adding, “it will come out and you will see.” One netizen shared a screenshot with the following information:

“You want the real story? Happened not far from us. Guys was [sic] busy loading cattle they had stolen. When members of rural safety approached them they opened fire. Guys from rural safety returned fire, resulted in the death of 2 and possible wounding of another. Suspects flees [sic] currently BOLO on them”.
In response to the screenshot, another Facebook user, who claims to have known the victims personally, said: “These are lies. You people are just protecting yourselves. These are lies and besides the whites in that area killed our livestock, were they killed? No! So don’t come at me with this comment”.

REACTION ON SOCIAL MEDIA​

The case caused an uproar on social media. When Facebook user Zama Hlatshwayo remarked that “Boers are killing us like flies”, Miranda Murta replied:

“Like flies [laughing emojis]. You kill your own like its [sic] a national sport… Every day on social media news feeds you read about it…”
Another netizen, Louis Johannes Pretorius said: (comment copied verbatim):

“they whant to rob and kill becous they are [expletive] sleg open your eyes whent to look for work on a farm plaeeees this time thy where stop befour killing kidz and old poepel how menny black poeple are getting rap murderd kidz is it the white poeple as well open yours eyes get rid of the ………….that arnt human and start beleving in a better SA for all of us i will also hunt doun anny one that whants to hurt my fammely black white [racial slur] indian no matter what the race so think what you want ther are more black poeple killing black poeple what do you say to thar its not about race its about humannety”.
