Unsolved farm murders leave void in family's lives

Durban - READING about a farm manager and his family being attacked with crowbars and cane cutters in their home in Glendale has angered Nish Ishwarlall.
His father-in-law, Dhir Roy Singh, and his partner, Kallawathie Beekarie, who both were farmers, were killed on their farm in Cottonlands, Verulam, in September 2018.

believed she was strangled.
The suspects fled with the couple’s TV and Toyota Conquest car.

A
week after the double killing, five men were arrested. Police recovered cellphones, the couple’s motor vehicle and household items. They were charged with murder and robbery.
The matter is being heard at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court.
Ishwarlall said that more than a year later, the memories of that day are still fresh.

“The house has been abandoned. A relative goes to the property once a month to tend to the garden,” said Ishwarlall.
“The home is a painful reminder of their gruesome deaths. We are now waiting for the suspects to go on trial.”
Ishwarlall said the family had put the couple’s belongings into a storage facility.

“My father-in-law farmed for 40 years. This was his livelihood. He and his partner, who sold fresh produce at the Verulam Market, were taken away so brutally. There is a void in our lives.”

Deelpan farm attack could have been prevented
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in North West is saddened by the attack on Derek Mathews and his family on their farm near Deelpan on Saturday evening.

Mathews, Vice Chairman of Grain SA, reportedly had a braai with family members when five armed men came into sight. Family members were tied up, assaulted and robbed.

This traumatic attack once again puts rural safety in the spotlight and further emphasizes that the ANC has failed rural communities. Not only is the fate of these communities living in fear ignored, but their right to safety is blatantly denied.

It remains shocking that the ANC government is watching farmers and farm workers being attacked and murdered with such brutality and still does not want to declare rural safety as a priority crime.

The failed ANC and SAPS have lost the fight against crime; we need a better trained, better equipped, police force to serve communities.

In order to prevent more farmers from leaving the agricultural sector, we must prioritize their safety and thereby ensure that food security is not further threatened.

The DA is therefore once again calling on the government to set up rural security units and specialized police units to help combat crime.

In our role as opposition party, the DA will be tabling a private members bill in the North West Provincial Legislature wherein we will be introducing a plan of action for community safety.

The DA will continue to put pressure on the ANC government to protect rural communities, farmers and farm workers

Perhaps gangstas were given incorrect information ?

One wonders which scenario is the second best choice ?

They probably assume that all farmers have firearms and money in a safe. And I'm assuming that sometimes they use inside info and that inside info is wrong at times, and other times they probably just try their luck without inside info.

One needs systems for early warning, a secure perimeter and to be vigilant at all times (which sucks), they operate all hours now (just more so in the dark), even in the suburbs.

I wish the rural safety could be improved, but our current government just doesn't have the will at all.

The scary numbers behind SA's farm attacks and murders

Durban - The number of farm murders in South Africa might not have been increasingly high in 2019 because the farming community have spent their time, money and efforts in improving their security
That was according to civil rights organisation AfriForum and a senior analyst at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), after AfriForum and the Southern African Agri Initiative (Saai) released AfriForum’s 2019 statistics on farm attacks and murders on Wednesday.

The most attacks took place in May (61), January (54) and December (50).

Most attacks were committed between 6pm and 3am.

The most murders took place in March (8) and April, May and June (6).

Former Female Farmer of the Year brutally attacked on her farm

Local farmer Mimie Jacobs was brutally stabbed last night in a farm attack that occurred on her farm Rosemead, just outside Bloemfontein.

Jacobs was stabbed by three men who were armed with knives. According to the victim’s brother, Graham Jacobs, at around 8 pm, the assailants kicked open the door of her farmhouse and attacked her with a knife.

“They wounded her on the head and part of the knife broke off and stayed in her skull. They then tied her up with an electric cable and forced her to make an e-wallet payment. They then threatened to rape and kill her if she did not give them the pin number, which she did,” explained Jacobs.

After they received the money she managed to escape. She then ran to her neighbour who called an ambulance and the police.

“She was taken to Pelonomi Hospital at around 11 pm, and was there until around 7 am this morning without receiving any assistance. We then decided to take her to Mediclinic where they managed to assist her immediately. The hospital removed the metal bit of the knife stuck in her skull quickly and she did not require extensive surgery,” he added.

Farmworker ‘sexually involved’ with farmer she is accused of killing

A farmworker and her lover appeared in the regional court in Ficksburg this week on charges of murdering the farmer she worked for and with whom she was allegedly sexually involved. Barry Baars was murdered on his farm near Ficksburg in the Free State over two years ago. Angeline “Angie” Nthabiseng Ledwaba (40), who was allegedly involved in a sexual relationship with Baars, and her lover, Abel Eric Phalatsi (32), appeared in court on Tuesday, charged with Baars’ murder. With them in the dock were Thabiso Johannes Motaung (45), alleged to be one of Ledwaba’s former lovers, and Mpho Daniel Hlalele (37). Halele was formerly the driver and personal bodyguard of the speaker of the Maluti-A-Phofung municipality. They are accused of murder, alternatively conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. His lower jaw was gone, then two shots in the chest and one in the neck, but the fifth shot came from below. As if somebody wanted to shoot him between the rectal area and his sexual organs
