Men who murdered Howick farmer, kidnapped an employee sentenced to life imprisonment

Durban - The Pietermaritzburg High Court convicted and sentenced two men to life imprisonment for murder, housebreaking, robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm as well as kidnapping.

Provincial police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said Sapholakhe Thusi, 42, and Micheck Khumalo, 47 were sentenced on Thursday.

Describing the April 2021 incident, Ngcobo said armed men entered a farm in Howick where they fatally stabbed the farm owner.

“The house was ransacked and the suspects stole appliances, groceries, a firearm and cellphones before they fled in the deceased’s vehicle,” said Ngcobo.

She said the suspects then kidnapped an employee.

A farm attack took place on 2 November 2022, at 23:45 on the farm Pypkop in Warden in the Free State province of South Africa.

Johan and Pam Kok were fortunate to survive an attack by two assailants who entered the yard by breaking the lock on the gate and then broke through the security gate and broke open the door of the home.

The attackers entered the home.

The door from the kitchen to the dining room was locked and this gave the couple time to call for assistance.

The attackers then kicked down the locked door and moved towards the bedroom. The bedroom door was also locked.

At this point Johan fired off a warning shot and this caused the brazen attackers to flee the home.

Farm attack, 2 farmhouses raided, workers assaulted, handcuffed, inverter, solar panel and battery taken, Kuschke, Polokwane​


According to the farm workers, the door of the home was broken open with a axe, one attacker who was armed with a hand weapon handcuffed two workers to each other after which the attackers cut and ripped out all the power wires in the home.

The lights were removed from the roof and put in a backpack.

The inverter, solar panel and battery were also removed from the house.

The workers were ordered to help carry some of the items.

They then were taken to a second house that had already been raided.

The workers were then had to help carry the stolen items to the tar road.

I'm not sure it is as simple as that. Some are just a local off his trolley, others are more targeted and organised, ongoing land invasion, stock theft and similar issues.

According to Magma Security and Investigation, on Monday 28 November they received information of a possible farm attack that was to take place in the Bulwer area by the same group of suspects who were allegedly involved in the above mentioned case. An operational team was then put together comprising Magma Security and Investigations, PMB K9 and PMB Trio Task Team.

In the early hours of Tuesday, 29 November at approximately 01:00 the said suspects were spotted travelling in two vehicles in the Boston area going towards Impendle.
“After a brief chase a shoot-out ensued as a result of the suspects opening fire at the operational team, where two suspects were fatally wounded and six were arrested,” the private security company said.

Two flat screen TV’s, a laptop, kettle, bag, cellphone and jewellery were recovered as well as a firearm, knives, crowbar, cellphones, gloves and balaclavas.

Police have launched a manhunt following an attempted murder and a house robbery incident in Goedgedacht farm, Limpopo. The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Monday, 28 November around 01:15.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), preliminary investigations indicated that the owner of the farm was sleeping with his wife when he experienced numerous gun shots aimed at them outside of the house.

Spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the farm owner retaliated and an unknown suspect managed to flee the scene on foot. Afterwards, the owner discovered that his wife was shot on the upper left leg and was later immediately rushed to an unknown hospital for medical treatment.

“The motive of the incident is unknown at this stage but police investigations are underway,” he said.

A farm attack took place on Thursday afternoon 24 November 2022, on a farm in Brits in the North West Province of South Africa. A woman (31) was leaving her house when she was confronted by approximately five attackers armed with pangas an axe and knife.

The attack took place between 14:00 and !5:00. Three of the attackers assaulted and dragged the woman back into her home.

The attackers tied her up and brutally assaulted her with their weapons. They were demanding firearms.

Hartbeespoort Emergency Medical Service attended to the woman who suffered serious head wounds and a broken bone.

She was transported to hospital where she has undergone three operations.
