A North West farmer was electrocuted by an electric insect catcher at the weekend, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Willie Lubbe, 32, was having a braai at the family's farm near Makwassie with his wife Hanneke, his mother Helena, his two children and other relatives on Saturday night, when he reportedly fell. A large insect catcher was hanging from a canopy near the braai.

"Wille stepped backwards. I am not sure if he lost his balance, but he grabbed at the insect catcher. He could not let go," Helena Lubbe said.

"Hanneke tried to pull him away, but she had to leave him because the current shocked her as well."

The family could not resuscitate him. He was declared dead in Wolmaransstad.

That's really sad.
Looks like it doesn't just catch insects ...
Surely these devices should be idiot/child proof?

I'm sure it's got stickers to warn people against touching it.

You shouldn't be able to touch any part that is dangerous.
Even in industry they use guards, mesh, rails, etc. to protect people from high voltages or moving parts.

What make of insect catcher was it. Seems too dangerous for residential use.
Maybe it would be a good burglar deterrent too.

Wonder if there wasnt a reason it couldn’t easily have been switched off at the wall socket?

Probably the people freaking out in the heat of the moment forgot about what to do?

People... if this happen don't pull on the victim. Run at then and shoulder them away from the object. Poor guy could have survive if someone just rushed and shouldered him off the thing.

Or tackling him or hitting him away with a chair.
Aren't those systems earthed?

I'm a wicked man. I just realized - this tragedy could have been averted if Eskom had implemented load shedding at the time.

Most people have the wiring to their lapas done themselves unfortunately. Especially on the farms. My Lapa has a separate circuit breaker apart from the house it was done by an electrician. DB board for the outside lights, 2 plugs and the main light for the lapa.

At first I thought it was the same insect catcher as the one I bought from Builders that looks like a tennis racquet
