Faster broadband is bad!

384k should be double the speed ~ 48kB/s but i expect about 38 to 45kB/s or so. If this price change is to take place i will be loging a fault/query august 1st if my line does not synch at better than 192k just for heck of it. should be fun :D

@hj2k_x - they only assure you of a minimum speed - 192k
Indeed. As i expected. Then they really havent done much at all with these 'price reductions'. Not for entry-level DSL anyway, which is what needs most attention IMO.

And the big wooden spoon for $%!& stirring goes to... Krycor.

Now since we're still talking about being happy with affordable 192k (unfortunately non-existent), why not look at this thread.

The midrange offering goes for $50/m on a one year contract ($99 cancellation), which is R225 using burgernomics (R350 @ 7 to the $).

Since there's quite a bit of stirring going on, it seems to me that a lot of the 192 users are bitching 'cuz they were getting a freebie in the first place ie. 384 speeds for 192 price. I get the feeling that there is a dollop of p'd-offness (call OED to add that word) for not keeping on getting 384 speeds for less than the 192k price now.

Maybe what needs the most attention is that it costs R58/m to have a prepaid fixedline, so including 1 2min call a day you pay R100/m for a fixed line in SA. For that famous "average South African" thats nearly 10% of his pay packet.

Indeed. So much needs attention when it comes to telecommunications in this country, its hard to know where to start :(

Line rental is ridiculous, be it pre-paid or otherwise, and as for the additional DSL 'line rental', dont get me started!

Maybe swordfish is right and I don't get it, but consider the following:
Right now a 384 connection + line + 2 gig ISP costs R651.
On 1 Aug 384 conection + line + 2 gig ISP will cost R544.

Are you saying that you would be happier that on 1 Aug Telkom kept you on 192 for R544 instead?

I am saying i would rather have a 192 connection at....

192 connection + line + 2 gig ISP costs R400 instead of keeping it R544 and upgrading to 384. The reason? I dont need the speed, and i want entry level for cost reduction.

And so do many people i would think....Myself included.

Here I am thinking that people wanted progress! From the sound of things y'all are still hankering for the days of good 'ol DOS 5.1, 'cuz darn it all, nobody needs anything but a terminal window to the local BBS!

How about entry level 786k for R68/m?

The fact that telkom is now going to "upgrade" our 192 lines to 384, was well, predicted, the moment they started to "Cap" our connections at 20k I knew that they were planing something like this! I used to get 35k+ easily with my line now nothing more than 20k! this is so like telkom, the worst part is that they are increasing the "normal" (if you can call it that) rental! this means that we will not actually save any money!(if you were using 192 before)

So I am happy with the "free" upgrade. having 384 will be better than having 192 no matter how you look at it! But and this is a big fat but, I think that the consumer should have the choice, like previously mentioned, it will be of more benefit to some people to have the same speed, but with the benefit of paying less! Then that money could be spend on other things like a larger cap or a second account!

The fact is if telkom dropped the bandwidth cost it would have been a hell of allot better!

People keep comparing the "old" 192 cost of R562 to the "new" cost of R544, when in actual fact they should be comparing a R651 drop to R544!

We keep comparing the "old" 192 with the "new" 384 since when we subscribed we choose the budget option for a reason, budget and the "New" 384 is not benefit the "old" 192 users all that much, we decided to go with a cheaper option, for any number of reasons, so when we "upgraded" we dont see it so much as an upgrade as paying the same for a service we did not elect to go for , even when we had the choice. I would have prefered a price cut, which would have allowed me to buy more bandwidth ... since I have a strict month by month ADSL/phone budget.

This also falls back to that statement from some that persons should manage their account better, because they scared they will run out ... the R100 odd rands you save on you 384 account can now be used to get another 1GB IS account, allowing even greater flexibilty in your surfing and downloading, relieving the restrictions we have in terms of cap. As a 192K user I do not get to appreciate any such price cut ...
Oh yes, 3GB on a 384 is the same to manage as on a 192 , 100 MB a day , the maths dont change :)
