I have a monthly MTN Ruby contract for 100GB pm. I watch Youtube and Amazon Prime, both set to data saver mode. I use my LTE Samsung phone as a hotspot. The MTN 100GB is consumed within a week.

Same phone hotspot, but using Vodacom data bundle of 100GB. The Vodacom data consumption is much slower than MTN, so the Vodacom data lasts longer. How can that be?

  • YouTube set to "Data Saver" is not a fixed bitrate.
  • If the connection quality is good, YouTube can still increase quality during playback.
  • Apps may preload more content when bandwidth is abundant.
If your hotspot on MTN is consistently delivering 50-100 Mbps while Vodacom is giving you 10-20 Mbps ( for instance), streaming services can end up consuming more data without you realizing it

When I was with eMpTyN on the contract I had I got 2gig free and I used Afrihost as my actual data supplier.

Afrihost data lasted almost twice as long as eMpTyN.

IMO -don't trust eMpTyN for anything.
