Fastest Dual Core Processor available

Killa, right on. But we need it for a SolidEdge machine, which only uses 2 cores. So go for the fastest C2D I'd say. And SE does not like 4C, we have a few C2Q machines, performance slower than the C2D

If it only uses 2cores can't the other cores be used for other programs? leaving 2 cores entirely for SolidEdge.

get the e8600 then overclock it to 4.5ghz 24/7

on a side note . . . cant you prompt the delvelopers of that software to update it to use four or more cores, in which case you can go i7 coz by the looks of things you are not limited by budget

We have actually discussed building an i7 whitebox instead of the HP system. Conradl sent me some interesting info on HP rigs, but one is limited in terms of processor choice. Our IT systems have standardised on HP systems though, so getting a whitebox system approved might prove challenging :)

UGS & Siemens (the makers of SolidEdge 3D) has not brought out a version that supports Quadcore processors (ie use of 4 cores) yet.

We have tested the latest SolidEdge 64bit version on similar dualcore and quadcore processors, the dualcore seems to outperform the quadcore. That is however the "fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants" feedback, as we cannot really benchmark systems with SolidEdge itself.

thats right, but technology seems to be moving at a fast pace these days, still remembering the old pentium 1 or 2 or 3 days...

There will be new tech for the future :)

Surely by the time he uses the 4 core/8 threaded i7, there'll be like a 32 core 64 thread XI98 or something....
