Fat bastards

I was wondering the same thing. Is this due to malnutrition? that people are fat because they eat r carbs as a basic food.
40% of SA is unemployed yet they can get to be over weight? Must be the diet, and not a case of eating to much but just wrong?

I see it falls to me again to give a boring explanation of this phenomenon. I recently read a book called ‘Fat Land’ by Greg Critser (good book). Critser talks about “The fattening of America”. It’s related to fast food (KFC?). Fast food issues that I remember were that fructose = bad (but cheap) and sucrose = good, palm oil = bad (but cheap) and other oils = good (‘good’ is very loosely speaking). Junk food is full of the ‘bad’ stuff. SA is a junk food king.

In ‘Fat Land’, Critser puts forward a theory, which I found intuitively appealing and I wonder if SA is not heading for this (the black gravy trainers have obesity problems) and if it is relevant in other countries. He maintains that obesity is more prevalent among the poor (Hispanics, etc.). This is because a metabolism, used to scarcity and famine, stores excess food as fat in case scarcity occurs again. This is good in times of scarcity but not good in times of plenty and it takes generations for metabolisms to adapt. Could SA’s new black elite and the SA population be suffering from the same syndrome?

This study was BS, they used BMI as an indication of "who is fat"...BMI is an absolute load of crap...
I have a BMI of 25.4, but a body fat of around 12-15% depending on the time of year etc...
According to their study, i am overweight....

a real study would have involved measuring proper body fat %

+ 1000000

These surveys done where they select a portion of people and based their findings on that is just plain stupid - gives a false perception that it applies to the majority.

I don't believe that 61% of our country is fat. I would say at least 45%. Regardless if the stats are true or not, this country does have a major problem. Have you had a look at the kids now days? They aren't forced to play sport like we were and so, many are over weight.
