Favourite coffee

DISCLAIMER PLS READ: b4 I get shot down in a hail of high velocity coffee beans and vitriol....:)

When I cant be ar$$sed I do occasionally make a cup of instant...so like to keep a jar at the ready in my kitchen.

Nescafe Colombia is about the only half decent strong, flavoursome one around IMO...
But a saw 200g jar of Antigua Brazilian Roast @ Checkers for R59.99 and am rather taken by it...

Anyone else tried the above or have their own instant favs?
This is a thread on decent coffee, in what world does instant have a place here?

I wonder if https://www.businessinsider.co.za/coffee-regulations-impact-chicory-mixtures-like-ricoffy-2019-9 has been passed yet

Ricoffy is not pure instant. It contains chicorry. Completely diff story.... that is total kak to drink.
Ricoffy apparently only contains about 25% coffee, and under the new regulations it seems they might have to change the name. Rinoncoffy? Years ago I ordered an "espresso smoothie" from a place starting with a K. I watched it being made, and as I saw the assistant spooning Ricoffy into the blender I asked her what she was doing. She said she was putting the coffee into it. When she finished I took the drink, tossed it in the nearest bin and walked out. I took it up with the head office, my objection was laughed off. Never been back.

Bit like establishments that bring you bloody marg when you asked for butter, and then the look of utter shock and confusion when you calmly advise the waitress/waiter that they are most certainly NOT the same thing!

Ignorance on the part of staff is one thing, but management hoping you won't notice is just insulting.

The Coffee Roasting Company at Lourensford is also excellent: great range with beans sourced from just about anywhere they're grown and good advice too. They roast locally and all bags have a roast date sticker. Only gotcha is that a lot of the the beans are seasonal so you're need a few different varieties to keep you going year round. Which isn't a major issue with their range (in store is larger than online) and it's good to have some variety.

If you can get to the shop then you can also taste (unfortunately now charged) the coffee you want to purchase. Definitely worthwhile since there's such a wide variety of coffees and personal tastes. I've tasted good coffee that was meh and others that were almost mind-altering - everyone is different.

Since I live 1500km away from Somerset West, I've also found some of the Terbodore varieties pretty good and more easily accessible.

Royal Coffee Roastery in Stoneridge Edenvale. They Roast the beans inhouse so they always super fresh. Tried all the Fancy SA brands but the freshness you get from Royal cannot be beaten. They also have a online shop.

I bought from them as few times, coffee was good, I bought a kilo of their freshly roasted beans of the day, got home and they had a terrible burnt smell. Tried them in bean to cup coffee machine, tasted like I had put a piece of charcoal in my mouth.
Took them back, but guy had a bit of an attitude, just left it and never been back.

I got a bag of the master blend 1Kg beans for around R300... tasted much too burnt and looked like it was roasted for far too long.

Thats wierd I've never had a bad bag. If you go there you must try the Guatamala I find it to be the most balanced of flavours. Also their biggest seller.

Tried them all , I stew my coffee like the Russians do.

No fancy modern appliances, just hot water, a cup, a lid and 5 minutes later it's brewed...

Noted thanks. Guess its cheaper too and a far wider range no doubt.

I hear to keep them in the fridge?

Yup it is cheaper. Wider range as well like you said.
I keep them in the chiller section of the fridge (bottom section with the glass drawer sorta thing). It stays fresh for about a month.

Late joiner here. I'm so tired of instant coffee (be it Jacobs, Douwe or any other brand I try) of late and need a change.

Due to the nature of my work (I travel and stay in accommodation half the year) I am thinking of getting an Aeropress and it's small enough to cart around and I can at least make a decent cup of coffee.

Anyone here use one and what beans are you using? Also anywhere I can go online to calculate the amount of beans required for say 4 cups of coffee a day (I know it will depend of strength of the brew etc.)
