I used to use fluxbox on slackware back in the day.

Was a bit of a pain to setup nicely - but was awesome once you had gone through that pain :D

KDE Plasma is sooooooooo pretty. But my install was really messed up, corrupted files, things missing. I dunno, was great while it lasted but most window managers I've had was Unity  and XFCE. Like I said I want to try MATE next but it is hard to beat XFCE for my use :)

i think the trick is to deploy the most minimal ver you can find of a de and then build what you like on top of it... thats one of the reasons I like xfce the most (comes stock with the least amount of bloat - kde and unity comes with most). try gentoo if you have the time (first install is very time consuming lol, but the freedom is endless - if it wasn't for Ubuntu's amazing update and overall support it would have been my go-to for everything)

my kids hog the xbox and I not really a console guy

Hey, to each their own. I never got into PC gaming, I play with the kids on the playstation.

Oh, and on topic, I am using xfce now, I used to be a huge fan of Mate though. I started on KDE, and keep threatening to go back one day...

MATE on Linux Mint 17.3

No Windows based machines anywhere, although i am investigating a Tier 1 Hypervisor build with both Linux Mint and Windows 10 layered on top. Gaming is taken care of by PS3, I have a XBOX one but jeez what a POS. Will be looking to sell it sometime soon.

slack had such a big impact in my young live lol... amazing dist

Slackware was my first experience with linux back in the early 2000's.

Probably not the best place to start but I learned a lot along the way :D

Cinnamon. Never got used to Unity

Ubuntu with Gnome all the way.

Find it much faster and easier to navigate than default unity.
Mainly because I don't like that unity bar all up in my face and no, hiding it is not too kosher either.
