fax with 3G modem

Is it possible to send faxes, using the fax feature of Windows XP, with a Huawei mobile 3G modem? Does anyone know?
I've been told by Huawei that their modems support faxing and XP detects the modem as a fax capable device, but when I've tried to send a fax it always fails. Maybe something needs to be set up on the network operator side? I haven't been able to find this out.

Fax with Huawei

Thanks for your response. You have obviously gone into this. When I had dial-up I used to send faxes with my internal fax modem. I still have that modem in my computer but for some strange reason whenever I try to send a fax with it now I get a message "No answer". After doing that I am unable to connect to the Internet with my Huawei modem and have to do a System Restore to get back to a point before I tried to fax. It's all very frustrating.

Between all the different data services... one of them needs to be activated to receive and send faxes.

Vodacom changed their webpage a bit so now i cant find the dang thing...
Hit back soon as i find it.

Strange, I was told they do not support fax. Apparently the 3GPP (?) spec does not require fax support anymore.

Will ask again.

Ugh, its all messed up.

Maybe they stopped being able to send. I guess your best bet is to sign up for fax-to-email solutions with someone like mweb.
They have quite a nice tutorial document you get when you signup on what attachments, how to use, etc.

So while youre strictly not using your modem to send the fax, your modem connects your internet, which enables your email, which allows you to send/receive faxes.

Oh, I have fax-to-email that I use to receive faxes. Did not realise that I can use it to send as well.

Yeah you can send.

I know mweb works it with a sort of bundle. You pre-purchase a bundle of x faxes at x price.

Dunno how other providers handle their sending though, you would have to check with them.

Hi Graham,

The firmware version details are not available to end users, sorry for this.

The E620 data card can support PC fax

OK, but that's the E620 which came out in 1872, just after the French Revolution.

The early data cards were pretty much phones in a card format. I used to plug a headset into them to make phone calls.

I think , in the quest for real estate and power, the newer cards dropped a lot of the features to rather focus on getting 14.4/5.6 in.

Some of the newer modems are already 'ready' for these speeds.

When will the networks be ready? When the kit arrives from the vendors. I suspect that 5.6 UPA will be available before 14.4 DPA though.

Or at least in SA where the constant back-haul problem will delay 'real-end-user' 14.4 for a very long time still.

Just worried that Vodacom was going to anounce 14.4/5.6 (soon) and render my B970 obsolete overnight ;)

Think the E180 and E230 support 5.6UPA

And in all that time I've never been able to send a fax with it, despite the manufacturer's claims and Windows XP detecting it as fax device.

You think it's a network thing? I can ask, but I think it's nowadays a non-issue as the modems don't support it anymore, in any case.

I remember the E620 went through a fair number of firmware releases. Might also be a factor.
