Fed up with Telkom

It's not the ISP as previously pointed out. The line is losing sync.

Ports being blocked is definitely an ISP issue.

Even so if your ISP can't do the leg work for you with Telkom then they are useless anyway.

But you know what do I know I'm with Mweb the worst ISP around according to this forum...yet never have these issues.

I've yet to find an ISP that will block ports on single users account.

A lil' bit off topic, but JA:

Well, I know for sure that a few ISP's block certain (High priority realtime 'common' ports) on Home/Consumer - Uncapped/Capped accounts to prevent bypassing their shaping policies/protocols etc. It doesn't take a Rocket "NASA" Scientist to figure out which inbound ports are "unreachable" (No-route-to-host) -".

It's relative very easy to bypass shaping/throttling on certain common ports through tunnels. Unfortunately people find all kinds of measures to bypass their system, therefore they do block it inbound more likely during business hours where demand is high.

Even our Canadian Business Servers are constantly monitored for unsolicited traffic/packet protocols. So, it's not a uncommon procedure for ISP's to prevent this sort of behaviour.

The reason everyone is saying get a 1 GB afrihost account is to determine whether it is the isp or telkom line - for the ppl saying it is not isp.

Then there is still the possibility that it is your isp + line. This means you are one poor bastard if this is the case. But get that 1 GB account right now. It is instantly activated to test.

But it's more like (in fact it's only possible) for the ISP to do it than Telkom who only supply the line.

I don't think the ports are actually getting blocked at all, that just doesn't happen. I would put my money on it being related to issues on the line itself.

Either way we won't know until we see some line stats, traceroutes, etc.

Feedback time:

Telkom rep has helped me. I owe him a lot.
Because there was a reported fault, it seems OpenWeb were doing something funny. So I e-mail them, not 10 minutes later the ports all open... Hmmmm ja... My suspicions are HIGHLY aroused.

The synch was lowered because of my issues, which I then spent time on Sunday i.e. yesterday looking at closely. I used another router, which stays up. They rectified the synch speed issue today so I will see when I get home. I basically got the internet up yesterday to some workable degree. Had Telkom told me they do this to run tests... would have made a massive difference to how I reacted.

Do not buy the Cisco/Linksys WAG120N. There is a flaw in the PPP/CHAP/PAP authentication code, that basically annoys the living hell out of the MSAM causing it to refuse to authenticate the modem for a time-out period. What I have done is to put the WAG120N into WAN mode i.e. internal modem is powered down, and uses one of the ethernet ports as a WAN port, and use the Telkom branded NETGEAR router as a modem only. This works like a charm.

I actually found that with just about every Router I've ever used that you have authentication issues on certain ISP's after a reboot.

So instead I just switch it off for five minutes and then switch it back on instead of doing an instant reboot.

Even have this with MWeb's own router now.

Well yes I have seen that. I am going to dig deeper into this...
