So in the end we just all pay off a loan one way or another.
 
Free education will work the same as Free hospitals in this country.

I agree about primary and secondary ... but tertiary should have higher standards for entry.

I also think that there needs to be a lot more involvement of parents in primary and secondary school ... but that's another issue :)

Dafuq? In Grade 2 you're learning multiplication, not counting 1,2,3 or colouring in the whole day. This guy is seriously out of touch.
 
Why do most people who are pro free university say "Germany does it we can too?" Our economy is a shambles compared to Germany's. A lot of people jump the NSFAS payments when they finish uni but they still want the middle and higher class people to pay for them. Don't get me started on their strikes. Bloody hooligans! Don't stop other students from accessing the campus just to get what you want. It's also funny how they've made this a race thing. I know a lot of white folks who aren't well off, living a low middle class life - which they've worked hard for.

It shouldn't be a loan, nor considered as such. It is an investment the country makes in its own citizens. And I'll pay for your children too. That is the point of tax...

Cut out the corruption and nepotisim I'd bet our hospitals could do much better.

I'm in no way advocating an immediate overhaul of our social system. I'm merely pointing out that other counties have a different approach to education and it seems to be working. If for example getting the money owed were the responsibility of SARS I'm sure the success rate would be closer to parity.

Look, I understand that finding the funding for education is a monumental task; but I don't think that it is a bad idea to migrate toward a free education model. It is my opinion that education should be considered to be the most important priority of the government, if not the primary mandate. If there is any argument against adopting a model which promotes the overall increase in education of the country's workforce, I'm all ears.

Not if you keep the standards high. Which professional organisations like ECSA work hard to do.

If they meet the standards and pass the tests, why not have more qualified people out there? It's a question of supply and demand.

That is exactly what I'm saying. Load it on tax and we all end up paying for it for the rest of our lives anyway.
So what is the diffrence? 10 years of debt vs 70 years of tax/debt.


You know that will not happen.
 
I'd like to share my 5 cents to the topic, Tertiary education should be free. I don't mind supporting that goal, I think it by now should be a free ride to learning. However, Higher education is not an investment that the country should pay, you are onus to your own higher education. In the end you are the one who should want to achieve more in life, it shouldn't be a right to get free higher education. Subsidizing poorer students and giving tax incentives to companies that train their staff should be the right way to go.

People thinking why other countries such as Germany or USA or China can have these free tertiary education and even higher education programs is mainly because their economies and Governance allows them to do just that. That's why people call them 1st world countries to begin with.

In South Africa we are battling from quite a few problems apart from this, Water, Bad governance, Corruption, Economic growth, Inflation. At this stage I'd think it too early to try subsidize higher education to a point so that it can be made free (if it does turn out that way). You can't raise taxes on people that are already battling to put food on the table or keep a stable job. Try Secure just one of the two and then lets talk about raising taxes.
