Students gathered for a mass meeting on Monday at UCT led by Fees Must Fall activist Athabile Nonxuba‚ who said any of UCT vice-chancellor Max Price’s “spies” should inform him that a shutdown will go ahead.

It is alleged that students received an email last week from the university’s student representative council that UCT will remove students who have yet to settle debts from residences.

A Fees Must Fall activist who attended the meeting told TimesLIVE the university was acting unfairly towards these students.

“It’s about all the issues that UCT are avoiding. They are delaying and don’t want to solve problems. There have been unsuccessful negotiations and meetings. We’ve had enough‚” she said.

Based on the number of people at Monday’s meeting a large number of people‚ including students and workers‚ would take part in the protest‚ she added.

UCT spokesman Elijah Moholola confirmed that the protest motives were centred mainly on continuous negotiations regarding the conditions in which insourced workers are employed.

“The UCT executive has worked tirelessly over the past year to address issues and to ensure the smooth insourcing of previously outsourced workers at UCT‚” he said.

“The executive is still in negotiations with unions and workers on some issues and will honour this ongoing commitment to resolve any issues that may arise.”

He said 23 students were on a “grace period” following financial exclusion‚ saying the fees had been outstanding for 15 months.

This is what happens when you waste the year away... you realise it's the last quarter and you don't have anything to show for it... so you convince yourself there's a future in politics.
 
Yeah, make it free to study next year. Then watch the lecturers leave and the university shut down for the year.

UCT 'shutdown' planned on Wednesday

Cape Town - A shutdown at the University of Cape Town is planned for Wednesday and it is reported that labour issues are the “driving force” behind this.

UCT student activist Simon Rakei confirmed following a meeting held on Monday at the institution’s Lower Campus, that UCT workers have resolved to shut down the institution over what they described as exploitative labour conditions.

UCT spokesperson Elijah Moholola said despite the looming protest action, academic activities and administrative operations will go ahead as usual.

Rakei said: “Workers have decided to strike after an employment agreement that was not honoured. There are various other issues but the exploitative labour conditions is the driving force behind the university shutdown.”

On Monday there were allegations made by a student publication that furniture was moved from the Steve Biko building in anticipation of protests however, Rakei said he has not yet to been to the venue to see if furniture was removed.

Half assed reporting. What employment agreement was not honoured and how?
 
Always happens before exams. Its the avoidance of studying pattern. Rather get into a cause that makes a decent excuse than actually use your very valuable slot at uni to get qualified.
 
At this rate they just shut down UCT, it's only a matter of time anyway. It's turning into a complete ****hole.
 
And why specifically UCT? Could it be because the WC is run by the DA? Who is funding this movement?

That's a bit of a stretch is it not? What about Stellenbosch and UWC, don't see these people taking over there like that, or is that not in the WC? I think it is more about the management at UCT then anything else. Whoever is in charge there is quite obviously a cowardly slime ball unable to handle what's happening there.
