Hahahahaha. No its not. I'm caucasian.

Look guys, We're both in our mid 30s. The topic of getting hitched and starting a family recently came up. She's on birth control which doesnt bother her. But before she decides to go off it, we wanna see how strong my swimmers are, if they even exist. And then try to plan from there.
Well in that case, I have even worse news than Pitbull for you in that once she'd stopped using contraceptives, fertility might take months or even years to return!

You can see if the little buggers move at around 650x magnification, if you have immersion oil and a high powered lens (around 1250 magnification) you can examine them quite closely.
Use some broken platelets to prevent squishing them.

Just ask your GP to fill out one of those pathology test requests for you. If I remember correctly it is Lancet who has a laboratory in Empire Road, Johannesburg. You will have to provide them with a semen sample. They will probably advise you not to have sex or ejaculate for a few days before. They will provide you with a sample cup, a room and some 'reading material'. That's it.

Correct.

Tell your missus to get off the contraceptive asap that way you can test to see if your swimmers are working, you've 2 year's to keep on trying

This. As a male who had to go through the whole mess when we were struggling, that's all it takes. However not every lab is equipped to do a sperm test but approach the major ones: Lancet etc. You should still have a doc to interpret the results for you though but I don't see why this can't be your normal GP if you wish. R2.5k for a test is ridiculous, I don't recall it costing that much. I do think it was a few hundred though but less than R1k when I had it done ( 2011-2012 )

It cost R600 when I went to get it done. That was in January.
You should get results in 3 or 4 days.

The results cover a wide variety of things, I cant remember them all but it had volume, shape of sperm / ability to swim etc

In the end they will tell you if you can conceive naturally.

Yes its an awkward thing to do, but if you are having trouble conceiving your partner could go through much worse

Right now they're only thinking of possibly conceiving sometime in the future…

It's still worth getting checked if you worried bwana, it took us 7 years to conceive and numerous tests and surgery, eventually we went IVF. No harm in having yourself checked early.

Lancet, take a sample. R180 if you want to find out if you're shooting blanks, R900 if you're trying to get the wife pregnant. Call before you go, they only take by appointment and the sample must be fresh and warm...

If you're far away from them you may need to rub one off in the car :D

Hey guys,

So here's a silly question: where can I go in JHB to see if I can have kids or not? Have a sperm count done?

I'm thinking a Urologist (possibly)?

My GF said to go speak to a GP first for a referral but why waste money?

Also, do medical aids cover these types of things?

Pomp the vrou or GF till she tells you she has a bun in the oven. If that doesn't happen in a few months, both of you should go for fertility tests.

What ^^^ said...

i also went for a test about 2 and half years back... i went to Unitas Hospital in Centurion... costed around R700-R900(cant remember)...

they check your sperm count, motility(how it moves, speed -whether the turbo is working), morphology(shape and size) and some other stuff i cant really remember...

we had issued having kids as well, my tests weren't the best, doc's said we can never have kids because of it. got a second opinion(my GP), he said BULLSHEVY, take some vitamins and proteins which im lacking in my diet, 3 months later the mrs was expecting, today my boy is 2 and half and healthy...

its good to have a check up before you even start planning, i suggest the mrs/gf does the same... PCOS is very common in women these days and they dont know it, and the treatment for it is quiet tedious so rather get a head start and also start dropping the pill... it takes some time for first timers to conceive and the longer she stays on the pill, the longer it may take to conceive
