I was kinda under the impression that they pulled the name out of their ummm hat. Didn't know its supposed to be based on a person.
afaik there are 2 opinions
1) It is named after a non-existent Ndebele or Sotho chief (sources differ), but no conclusive evidence show that he actually existed..
2) It is named after the apies river, but in Sotho the word ape is Tshwene and not Tswhane (maybe it is in Ndebele since they are dialects)...,if this the case then my beloved Pretoria which I have lived in all my life will be reduced to aapstad !
Pretoria in the other hand is named after
1)Andries Pretorius, kommadant-General during the Boer-Xhosa wars, leader at Bloed Rivier (after Dingaan murdered Piet Retief) and leader at boomplaats, his son M.W Pretorius (Pretorius street is named after him and his father, he was also the first President of the ZAR), founded the old Pretoria on his father's farm rust-den-ouden (where he hid once C.J. Rhodes put a price on his head).
The first names of Pretoria used to be Pretoriusdorp, Pretoriusstad then eventually Pretoria 2 centuries ago when it was declared our capital
2)The word Pretoria is a combination of Pretorius's surename and the latin word Praetorian, names after the Roman Preatorian guards which literally means capital and to control.
Regardless, which one would you love to live in?
of gaan ons nou van aapstad na kaapstad vir vakansie?
