Fibre and Load Shedding

Century City Connect installed this ONT (which has power coming from a small black box power connector). The yellow cable and blue cable connect to my router (which also has power connector coming from a small black box connector).

The modem says 9V on the black box plug thingy
The ONT says 12v on the black box plug thingy


Will call CISP and ask too.
 
If the beeping every 10 seconds annoys you get someone to open up the UPS and cover the internal speaker with lots of prestik.
Some people remove the speaker.
I choose not to as the internal speaker also acts as an alarm for when things go wrong, like your battery is old and needs replacing for example.

This is my little 600VA UPS that is 17 years old i have at work to keep my iMac running during load shedding, it only needs to keep running 10 minutes max while the guys at work switch over to generators (sometimes less time if they know we are going to have load shedding :ROFL:)

I've got lots of prestik on mine, there is a soft beep which I prefer. I know when the battery is running low then or when power goes off....

And here I went and drilled a hole through it.......was lazy.

Now you take those 2 items marked 9v and 12v and plug them into your UPS, easy peasy, problem solved.
And whats more you will have a somewhat better protection against Surges in electricity and Lightning.
The UPS should in theory take the knock and clean the electricity before it goes out again.

Usually you will have 2 boxes. The ONT that powers the incoming fibre line and the router (with wifi) that distributes the internet over your LAN/Wifi network. So both boxes need power.

The ONT should use around 24Watts and the Router between 12W and 20W, so you need at least 40W for 2.5hours, or 100Watt hours of storage capacity in the battery.

I just had a similar experience at home, where my UPS died after 1 hour running only the fibre ONT. The UPS seems to use power too, just to run.

I actually seem to need about 70Watts for 2.5 hours which is 175Watt hours of storage.

At 12V, that's about 6.25 Amp hours of capacity, but the problem is that batteries are rated for 20 hours and not 2.5 hours. So we probably need double that, or at least a 12V 12ah battery.

A UPS with at least 2 x 7ah batteries should be fine. Generally they are rated at 1000VA or more, but check the manufaturers data sheet to see what batteries are actually included.
20W is quite a bit, most are between 7 and 15W.
 
So after Vumatel recommended people get a UPS, some did, and it still didn't work for them

What do you mean it did not work for them?
The issue is presumably, that during load shedding the ONT/ONU and router power is just one element in the chain that may require power.
It depends on precisely what technology has been deployed, and where any active points are. If there are only two (your home and the central node0, then only those two points will require power backup. BUT if there are street cabinets somewhere else that also require power, then that could be the point that determines how long the service is up for.
But without the suppliers telling you what is for what, you could go to lots of trouble to back up your end only to find that you still don't have service when the power fails in your area.
