Hi,
Please could someone assist with regards to running a fibre link between 2 offices.

They are 1.2 km apart owned by the same company.
I have spoken to Neotel and they want to charge a monthly fee for a service between the 2 points.
I have spoken to DFA and they will only supply off of their own network again with a monthly fee.
I have spoken to a civil engineering company, but they say they can do it but require a company like DFA to terminate the fibre as we do not have an ECNS license.

All we need is a link between the 2 offices but not a massive monthly fee and speed limitations.
Does anyone have any suggestion with regards to this.
Thanks
Michael

I assume that the offices are at different physical addresses?

The actual laying of the fibre is extremely costly, and getting the wayleaves are going to give you headaches as well. Your best bet is to use something like FSO or WLAN equipment in the ISM bands (though they're quite limited in bandwidth).

The moment you want to go off-campus fibre becomes prohibitively expensive.

There are some 30GHz high bandwidth devices now available using license free bands that may be an option, the real question is what is your data throughput requirement and how stable/redundant do you need it?

Microwave wireless link is probably your best bet.

We are looking from a long term perspective to need 50Mbps throughput.

Slightly worried about line of site though. Any suggestions of a company who could assess this for me?

thanks

Microwave and free space optics might be options for you to look at.

Microwave/wifi link.

Paying through the nose for a physical fibre connection just isn't on, especially with a tight budget.

The guys from sawireless did one for me installing two Ubiquity Rockets with dish. I could have bought the units myself, but I ask them to source the units for me (if the units fail, they have to fix it!).

The only thing I regret, I should have got the Rockets Titanium as the port support Gigabit (which in theory should have increased the speed rate).

the distance between the antennas are 1.2km with clear LOS and i'm happy with the link. It runs voice (VoiP) and data and not a single drop on the speeds even in heavy storms.

Now, there is wireless unit from Miro (Carrier Class) that can support up to 400mbps but it can be quite expensive: http://www.miro.co.za/detail.aspx?pid=2311&p=Carrier-Class&sp=Carrier Class&spp=&spid=249&sspid=

Is supposed that you still need a "Licence" even if the link is on the "unlicensed band"... I applied for it last september after the ICASA strike and i'm still waiting....

Just some feedback. Tried sawireless out. No success. They dropped my like a bomb. Trying another company. Will let you know the results and what equipment.

Eish that sucks and is quite strange, they were very keen to help me out when I got in contact with them and they drove out to quote us promptly.

Yes do let us know what you come up with and results.

why dont u use wifi hotspots, you just need to create mount some wifi towers of some sort between the 2 locations. put a password on your wifi and u are good to go.

Good Morning,

Have you managed to source a service provider?
Where-about are the 2-offices situated?
What line speed & data quantity do you require?

You are welcome to PM me

Thanks
