Hi,

So I just got fibre at home the guys from openserve came and connected everything. Not sure what it's called a small white box that connect to a bigger huawei box( has Ethernet ports). I'll get the exact names of what the 2 boxes tomorrow.

When I went to talk on the guy told me my dlink moderm abt 3 years old Will work but the technician said I need to buy a new moderm That's fibre capable.

1 is the technician correct or the guy at the telkom store?

2 is the Huawei box that has Ethernet ports a moderm? What exactly is it?
If I connect my pc via Ethernet directly to it will it work.

Any suggestion on what moderm to get. I've got 2 ubiquity ap lr boosters so don't need a top of the range moderm. Anyone has any experience setting these things up please let me know

I've never used a fibre moderm before so have no idea what's a good make/brand.

Thanks

So it's. A huwei small box that the fibre cable is connected to and from it a yellow cable labled optical is connecting to a bigger Alcatel Lucent moderm.

Alcatel Lucent box has no Wi-Fi any idea why I can't connect an Ethernet cable to my dlink moderm?

Do I even have to do that since I have a Wi-Fi booster?

Does your dlink modem have a WAN port ? If so connect that WAN port to port 1 on the Alcatel device and ensure the fibre is connected from the alcatel to the Huawei box. Then dial your pppoe from the dlink and it will work

The small box is the Junction Box - like your old Telephone Wall Jack.
It connects to the bigger white box which is the Optical Network Termination (ONT) using an optical patch cable (Yellow?)
You can't use the bigger box as a router or for Wifi, those functions have been disabled.
You have to get a network cable and run it from Port 1 on the ONT to your router.
Any Router that supports WAN function will work - so the one you have is fine as long as it has a WAN port.
Sometimes the WAN port doubles as your first Ethernet port on the router.
So now you will have three devices there. The Junction box, the ONT and your Router.
After you have connected all that and turned it on, then you will have to log into your router using it's IP address (using another cable or the default wifi settings).
Find the WAN settings page and choose login via PPPoe.
Enter the username and password that your ISP gave you, and then try to connect.
If you can browse the Internet, then great. If not you have to call your ISP.
Give your ISP the B number that is printed on the ONT device or on the box that it came in.
Then they will connect you.

... lets retype this then :(

The Not supplied by OpenServe, assume it is Huawei based from what I've been reading?

Looking at the pictures above, Lazy, you also running a split configurations, Router (white), Wifi AP (Black).

hmmmm. So the OpenServe/CW package leaves a OTN behind... nothing more.

My current VDSL router is a Draytek Vigor 2760 that has a EWAN input port.

Am I wrong, but looks like I still need to get a modem in the middle there, into which I will plug my EWAN port and into which the Fibre coming out of the OTN will patch ?

Yes, the ONT is Huawei, but it is not a router.
Yes, you can use your Draytek as the router.
Then put the WIFI AP next if your draytek doesn't have wifi capabilities.
Your draytek will function as the modem.

Oh Geez.

Let's just get this right please guys.

1) The white box against the wall, is nothing more than a SPLICE tray. The cable from outside your home goes in there, it is spliced to a connector, and the little yellow cable plugs into it.
2) The other side of the little yellow cable, plugs into the ONT. The Optical Network Terminator unit, converts the data from the Fiber, into Ethernet - it is a bridge, it is transparent. That is the little white box above the black box, which LaxyLion posted.
3) Your broadband ETHERNET router, connects via ETHERNET cabling, to the ONT unit. :D

The Draytek with a "EWAN" port, will more than likely work. EWAN presumably would stand for something like "Ethernet Wide Area Network". So yes, Draytek to ONT, ONT to Fiber cable.

Hopefully, that clear things up a little bit.

Not wanting to be funny, but what for? You HAVE to use the ONT that they provided. You can not replace it with a different ONT, you can not replace it with your own Fiber equipment. It HAS to be the specific one that OpenServe installed (for PON networks at least).

The ONT (Optical Network Termination unit), is married to the OLT (Optical Line Terminal), which is what you connect to at the Exchange. Remove it, and your service will not work. OpenServe MUST install the ONT on your premises together with the Fiber line, otherwise, they are more than likely not yet completed with your installation.

Just because I'm curious and would like to know.

Well can't with the Huawei as Openserve don't use them in Durban... but for curiosity sake:

I have Alcatel Lucent model: I-240G-D
I also have a Nokia, and the box has the exact same model as the Alcatel Lucent.
The boxes are actually identical (structure & stickers) except one has Alcatel Lucent branding, and the Nokia box has no branding at all

Talking under correction, but for their networking gear, I actually think Nokia merged into Alcatel Lucent. Phones went to Microsoft, Networking went to Alcatel.

What they install, will greatly depend on what is and isn't in stock. I don't think there is one specific piece of hardware for everyone around the country.

I vaguely recall something about Alcatel for the coast, and Huawei inland, but don't quote me.
