Good day all

I need a bit of advice and insight into a problem

I'm from Potchefstroom area where fibre and adsl are both a headache and not very commercial in Apparements

Im planning on moving to JHB/PTA in the near future and have seen that some Apartments/Complexes offer Fibre in the rental package

I understand that with some places i wont be able to add my own lines and this fact of included fibre attracts me alott

But i want to know what will the catches be and how would such a package work? on a token system or uncapped or some other way? will i be able to pay for only the line and arrange my own ISP package?

What should i look out for?

Im a very big noob with these kind of stuff

In my opinion it is a grey area, depending on the landlord.

In the complex I live in, MetroFiber installed the fiber on each unit and left a pamphlet to call the ISP when ready and left.
There is currently no obligation for the landlord or tenant to pay for an inactive line.
In this case, call the ISP who participates on that line and you are connected.

Some landlords are aware of this and simply mention "Fibre" as a bullet point and they explain the fact above when you sign on.
Some landlords don't have a clue, particularly because MetroFiber in my instance are not charging anyone for the line they have installed whilst they remain inactive.

Some landlords may have already activated the line, and the line is active as you move in, particularly the furnished corporate apartments. They too would use any manner of ways to indicate this to you.

More knowledgeable people will jump in and give further advise.

Fibre is no different than adsl. You install fibre if available as you need it and when you move out you cancel. If you sign a contract and move out before the contract is done they will hold you responsible to pay it because they fibre was installed on your name so the lanlord or agency will not get involved in any way unless they need to make changes like drilling into walls and stuff then you just ask them and I doubt the landlord will say no.

Check what fibre is available by looking at coverage maps. Some fibre providers are not always easy to spot like A360, apexeo fibre, lighttree ect ect they install in estates and complexes so you don't always know if you would have access to fibre or not from these providers.

So when most fibre providers install inside a complex they will install a connection point to each apartment or house. This can sit outside the house or sometimes inside the unit. This is basically a little white box where a fibre flylead can connect. It is the same has having a telkom phone line inside the apartment with the little box where you plugin either the phone or the router. When you want fibre you need to sign up with a ISP and they will organise for the ONT to be installed and then the router. You pay for this like you would for adsl, when you move out you cancel it like adsl just depending if you sign a contract or go month to month.

Most complexes when they say they have fibre they most likely mean they are fibre ready and each unit hast a fibre box installed.

So just to clarify most of them only has a line when they advertise it and no form of contract. I have to sign that with the isp itself (which is better for me)

Yes, then they will send an installation team to route the fiber patch cord from the outside box to inside your apartment/house.
