A faceless person told me via the security intercom that 'in 4 to 6 week's' they are going to start 'trenching' for the fibre in my street. And the faceless person 'ensured' me that they will put my paving back exactly as they found it. How can somebody just turn up, make such statements, without leaving contact details? Does anybody know who manages this project?

I'm pretty sure they have to have the wayleave approved from the owner before they can start trenching. Not too sure how this process works though.

As far as I know (and it did happen to both my dad and father-in-law), the fibre guys have the right to trench on that initial section of pavement. If its bricks, then those are lifted and put back down (father-in-law) or if its precast concrete, they dig underneath it without disturbing it (dad).

Vumatel is planning to trench in Bothasig. They are normally pretty good about dropping flyers in letterboxes and wearing idetifiable clothing. I assume you call them faceless because you didn't want to open the door / go outside to see who was at your gate?

Just as with all their other locations and any other company putting fibre into the ground they can only do so with City approval and the required way-leaves.

I suggest you go to their site and show your interest so you can be notified of the town hall meeting were you can ask whatever questions you need to ask.

The Bothasig Residents Association as well as the Neighbourhood Watch will probably also be contacted by Vumatel to help spread updates, so you can also get in touch with those entities.

If you don't want fibre please send them my way.

If you opened the door for the guy he would've given you a nice brochure. It explains everything.

Generally they try to drill underneath your driveway, and trench in-between driveways on adjacent properties. They drilled underneath my driveway earlier this week, I am currently waiting on the trenching team.

They trench and install the grey box on your property edge at around the same time (this is were your preferred fiber provider will attach their CPE), if the grey box can be mounted to some publicly accessible wall/vibracrete. If not (for example if you have a palisade fence) they leave the grey box in the "mini" man hole/junction box on your property edge (usually shared between two properties) for your preferred fiber provider to install at a later date, as they are not allowed to go onto your private property without your consent.

This is not always the case however, especially for the part between your home and the junction box, that part is always trenched, unless you have that section done privately.

TL: DR - They try not to dig up your driveway unnecessary for the main Fiber Lines. Yes, they are allowed to dig it up, as your private property ends at your fence border and does not extent to the public "sidewalk".

Also, if you are not being a dick about it, they tend to be rather accommodating, just talk to the foreman on site.

#P.S. - Please don't spoil the fiber experience for all of the people further down the street from yourself. And brace yourself for a power/water cut or two as they will more than likely hit unexpected/undocumented buried infrastructure...

Says the person whom registered to post here and never return to read the comments. :D

Welcome to MyBB and come back soon.

Hi everybody, re calling them faceless... No malice intended. The intercom is in the middle of the house (closest to my office) and I could not see him. He was right next to the postbox, but did not drop any 'nice brochure' in there. And I am also looking forward to fibre, like everybody else. So, no, I am not going to mess up anybody's experience. Just for the record: I am a disabled female and won't be able to redo my paving by myself. I was merely trying to get that across in my original post. But, now we are all on the same page. Thanks for the Fibre company's details. Will contact them tomorrow.

One last thing, they have a rehabilitation team that comes around a few days/weeks later to fix any pavements/driveways that they had to trench through, for whatever reason. These guys actually do a decent job, most times (not always) better than original. The one property I saw last night they were redoing almost the entire sidewalk's brickwork.

What I am trying to say, it is extremely unlikely that you will need to do anything privately (unless you want to take this time to redo your sidewalk in a new way, as it will be deconstructed to a certain extent) and their phone lines are open should you have issues...

Hi bothasig#1,
Just something to remember, when they do start trenching by you, they will put a black in ground box in the trench - try to get them to put this box nearest to where they will come through your wall/property at the easiest point of access to your house if there is one.

For example, I have a carport just on the inside of my boundary wall, and instead of them installing at the end of my property - I managed to catch them at the right time and had them set the box in the ground closest to the car port. Now, when they install the wallbox against my boundary wall, they dont have to trench my garden, but can just continue the fibre up and along the carport framework, into the house.

Note that the fibre and the CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) belong to Vumatel. This equipment and fibre installation is the +/- R1700 installation cost (some ISP are offering to include this cost in their packages). They will need access to your house in order to install the CPE near a plug point for power.

The CPE is a fibre to 8 port LAN converter. Your in house router is then connected to this CPE.
They just completed trenching and pulling in the piping for the fibre in Spilbergen road area yesterday. Did a great job with minimal disturbance of paving, All cleaned up nicely.
Heres a link to the vumatel doc about the CPE, etc. https://vumatel.co.za/files/VUMA-Quick-Start-Guide-R5.pdf

Hope this helps a bit.

Bit of a Necro, but noticed on the Openserve map that they rolled out fibre between Vryburger Ave and Bosmansdam road. Status of the area is Pre-order.

Wonder if there are any Vumatel clients that will be switching over.

Edit: Must be a map coverage error. Selecting an address only allows you to capture interest.

In Edgemead and received a pamphlet in the mail about Openserve installation now available. Didn't even know were here. Have Vumatel at the moment. Not too happy. Tempting.
