Fibre in Strand

It is part of the fault and scheduled work notifications sent by SAIX.

Ok, so two things. I have confirmed that the fibre being installed above is not DFA. They do however have fibre in the area already, and provide service to the Cellular providers in the church on the corner of Da Gama and Broadway:

Telkom has updated their coverage map to indicate that they are in the process of rolling out VDSL in Strand :D:

It is not fibre, but it is better than nothing.

3 months since your post.. I'm still waiting for VDSL. I upgraded to a 20mbps line in April and was told it was VDSL. So i got a VDSL modem and all, only to find out it's just 20mbps ADSL.

20mbit ADSL profile in Strand? They contacted me about a year ago to offer 20mbit, I upgraded and my line was down for a week. They then reverted back to 10mbit and told me they made a mistake and that 20mbit is not available yet.

They still seem to be actively trenching, just last week they did another section close to the BP/Spar in Broadway. These type of installations are not quick, it takes months to years to complete. The physical trenching is what eats most of the time. At work it took Neotel 14 months to install a single fibre line at one of our sites. Remember that a company cannot simply trench the whole area, they need wayleaves from the municipality for each section before any ground is broken.

Oh yeah, 20mbit indeed. Came back here to check if any news popped up regarding the VDSL rollout, and then I saw your reply - so my response is a tad delayed.
I stay close to the exchange, so I'm probably just lucky in that regard. I'm not on the Spar/BP side of Strand. I stay close to the OK/Beach Road - the old, shoddy side. lol.

Lol its not that bad. That means however that you are close to the two major exchanges (Strand 3 and 4) they have about 2k+ lines connected on them last time I checked. They are located in the building behind the post office. You can check which DSLAM you are connected to on this page: https://ssl-1.ipact.telkom-ipnet.co.za/pubcgi/internal/NBView.pl. I am on Strand 4.

I also spoke to someone at Telkom to find out about the project status of VDSL in the area, there is no ETA listed on the system but he is attempting to find out for me.

Those exchanges are a mess. We have a wireless POP at Cortland Place - directly opposite those exchanges. Telkom could not provide us with an metro clear from there to Teraco. We ended up having to self provide (ie. dig...) from our fibre enabled POP in Ocean View.

Upgrade scheduled

The upgrade is scheduled. The 6th of September seems to be due date:

Was the company installing the fibre Corline? MCT installs the DFA fibre in the area, but I have seen Corline in the area for the past few months, I am not sure who they are installing for.

Hi All

I have been trying to get ISP's to take interest in Fibre, in Strand for a while now (and last week I noticed yellow fibre trunking being installed down Broadway about 200m from my house). Last year Feb the feedback from Cybersmart was:

"We have checked on the location provided and it falls into an area
that has live fibre infrastructure but the central fibre node needed
to provide connectivity has not been completed as yet by our provider.
We have received an estimated date during the 2nd quarter this year."

This year it is:

"I have checked on the location provided by you and although it falls
into the general fibre coverage area, your road does not currently have
an active fibre circuit installed.
We can make the FTTH services available to your location and your
neighbours' from the closest fibre route, which is on De Vos Street,
provided we can obtain approximate combined customer uptake of R10 000
per month along the new fibre route. Please bear in mind that each
additional address will change the minimum uptake amount, as the
distance is the main factor affecting the feasibility."

Other ISP's have considerably higher minimum signup's required so I would like to get a feel for the amount of people interested? DFA seems to have infrastructure in the vicinity: http://www.dfafrica.co.za/coverage/

Am I really the only one interested in the area?

PM me your details. If you are in a security estate or block of flats we may be able to help.

What? I only noticed now the new posts and when I'm checking my area it's showing VDSL (up to 20 Mbps). I wonder if this is now truly VDSL or still just ADSL2+. Think I should give them a call then.

EDIT: Just called, she says there is VDSL, but not active yet, they are still testing. Maybe in a month she says.

I'm just excited for VDSL since I'm not hopeful for fibre any time soon. And besides, I stay close to the exchange and so my ping is like super-low when gaming. Even my brother using fibre has a higher ping... And the guy told him he'd be hosting everything...lol.

So Frogfoot referred me to Octotel yesterday as apparently they have started rolling out in Strand. This seems to be true but it only seems to be for beach road. Can everyone try and get as many sign ups as possible on Octotel, and maybe join the facebook group so that we can try and get fibre for the rest of Strand? They provide open access fibre, so there is multiple ISP options available on their network, see the bottom of the web page here: https://www.octotel.co.za/order/

Hi Everyone.

So I have read through all the talk about Fibre in Strand, but there has been no new updates. I have checked out the Octotel website, but the information on here is minimal about Strand and their map is very pro active only for Cape Town.

Is there any new updates? I see that there is Fibre in Broadlands Road, one street away from me from another company?

I have signed interest with Openweb, Webafrica, Vox, and Afrihost to create some demand.

Any pointers?

I see they started digging in the week from Strand beach hotel to main road.

There was some white, blue & orange pipes laying around.

Any idea guys?

The last feedback I received from Octotel is that they are struggling to get the required wayleaves from the council/municipality to be able to start the trenching. This is a normal hiccup I have myself experienced before at work, trying to get fibre installed. This close to the closed period (mid Dec to mid Jan) the council is very reluctant to issue any wayleaves. Octotel is planning on rolling out in Strand in phases, my area, Lochnerhof is apparently part of phase 6. I have however not been able to get any ETA's yet. For an update from Octotel on your area I would advise getting in contact with Octotel on their Strand Rollout Facebook page, I got a pretty quick answer from Amura there.

A lot of the other fibre being installed in Strand is part of Telkom's VDSL rollout. But trying to get any info from them is like trying to squeeze water out of a rock.
