Fibre ISP Comparison

I've been looking for a comparison of the actual network performance of the various fibre providers...

There are lots of big names like Vox, Mweb, WebAfrica, etc in the game, but but also lots of more reasonably priced guys like Cool ideas, xdsl, greencom, crystal web, cell c... etc.

Is there any indication of the type of service and the quality of their networks (local vs international bandwidth and latency, peak / off-peak times?)

Maybe we can get a sticky going with a standard format where folks can upload their package, provider, and speedtest result?

(maybe an idea for a myBB article) - it will help not only those currently on fibre, but also those going to go on in the next year.

.

That's a relatively strange statement to make, as Vox has one of the cheapest entry points to FTTH at R449...

fair enough, vox probably falls inbetween as their deals are very good. They become more expensive as you move up to the higher speeds through with cheaper packages available (and uncapped vs some of their capped products)

I am with Cool Ideas, 20/20 uncapped package. It is brilliant. Stable. I have no problems with it at all.

I am able to play a game, while streaming it online. And at the same time my tenant is streaming netflix. And I cannot feel it.

I think I have downloaded about 400gb worth of data since it was installed middle March, and I was away for a week

Brilliant

I think at this momemt most residents would aim for a 20/40/50 package, not caring too much about uploads. I, for example, have a 20/2mbps package witn Cool Ideas over the Vumatel network. It is uncapped unshaped and includes a free router(not a great router, very poor coverage actually, but that does not bother me too much)

On the topic....

It seems like nobody is getting throttled on the uncapped accounts at the moment :)

Going slightly off topic...
My area is getting vumatel, and I see the CellC offer also covers the installation of the CPE by Vumatel. So they are about R60 more expensive than Cool ideas, but payment of the CPE installation more than covers that for a few years...

The router they give is Huawai... not sure if its better than Cool Idea's?

Interesting thing with this offer is it's "Month to month" but if you cancel within 12 months you are liable for the left over amount of the Installation, Connection Fee and Router Fee. IE:

"R1,710, free connection worth R999, and a free Wi-Fi router with LTE failover worth R1,799."

So if a customer signs up and isn't happy with the service after the first month, they would be liable to CellC for R4133.

"Should you decide to cancel C-Fibre less than 12 (twelve) months after initial activation thereof, you will be liable for the costs incurred by Cell C in order to provide C-Fibre, of which costs include:
the installation fee;
the connection fee; and
the cost of the Wi-Fi router."

So it's a month to month term but you risk being liable if they don't deliver.
