Hi guys,

I drove past guys busy installing some lines in my area. When I asked, he said that they are installing fibre lines.

Where can I confirm if this is the case or is anyone aware if this?
I will definitely cancel my LTE uncapped application for this.

Thanks in advance.

I stopped next to one of these sites, it was in Bergbron Drive 2 weeks ago and spoke to the contractor.

He confirmed that they are busy installing Fibre. They are working for Huawei, and contracted to Telkom. He also mentioned that they have a deadline to complete the whole area, Bergbron, Florida Glen area by end on May 2016.

Hopefully we will get some more details soon!

Cool.

According Charl (TelkomZA), coverage maps are updated 3-6 months prior to go live as such. So I am expecting this to be somewhere in 2017.

I took up the LTE uncapped offer. After 3days I am delighted. Download speeds in the region of 22-25megs with upload 5-6megs.
Last night 3 of us could stream with no issues.
So when fibre is up and running, I will consider sticking to LTE or go fibre. Hopefully fibre prices also improve a little bit by then.

In which direction is your LTE antenna pointed? Up on 5th Street- my downloads are similar to yours but my uploads max out at around 1.5mbps. If the fibre pricing comes in anywhere near the uncapped LTE offer we'll move over as well!

I received a call this morning from Telkom, they have confirmed that the street that we are in are ready for Fibre. I can apply for an account and they will call me within 48 hours.

The problem is that we do not feature on any coverage map as yet. How can I get this service from another ISP?

Any ideas?

It takes 3-6 Months for them to update the coverage map.

So after all of the work Telkom has done in the area, they are still not ready. They have attached the Fibre lines on the existing overhead lines, but not Fibre yet.

About 2 weeks ago Vumatel delivered a pamphlet in our postbox, with some information and where they will install the access point on our boundary wall.

Saturday morning they mounted the box on the wall, and yesterday morning they started trenching! Looks like Vumatel will win the race in our area.

Hopefully we will be up and running by November.

Thanks for the update. Pricing and options should be interesting.

Vuma started yesterday digging trenches in Cebeni Place, Northcliff Ext 25. They were here 2 weeks ago saying that they will start. The gentleman also mentioned that with Vuma you get a dedicated line and Telkom they still share the fibre line, who can confirm or deny this. If it is true then Vuma is the way to go, however they only allow MWeb, Cool Ideas, Cell C and VOX as ISP's and based on the article on the fastest Fibre download speeds none of them are that great. Cell-C looks like they could be the best option with free installation, Free connection, free Wi-Fi Router, uncapped and month-to-month contract for R1099 for a 50mb/5mb line, the same I am paying for a 10Mb ADSL line.

In terms of the network architecture, he is somewhat correct. Telkom uses PON and Vuma AON. Pragmatically PON will not affect your performance in any way, unless you are opting for something like 1Gpbs speeds, which I don't even think Telkom offers.
