Fibre now the same price as ADSL

Somehow I dont think this applies to SA. Neotel charge R5/meter/mb/month for backhaul

so a 20km 10mb link will cost you a million rand a month...
 
How the fek can they justify a price per meter per mb??!?!!?

Thats just BS on the highest order.
 
Maybe it’s all a ploy to promote wireless technology. One decent fibre back bone, many wireless clients, sounds allot more cost effective to me for every one.

I think you wrong, DFA charges R5.00 per meter/pm for a fibre strand, not per megabyte

Which product is this?

My previous company was paying around R1600 a month for a 1Mbps synchronous fibre connection (IIRC), this is a flat sum, no per mtr/mb etc calculations.

As far as I am aware Dark fibre Africa charges per metre for fibre, they don't charge per mbps. If you light up 100mbps or 40Gbps that is up to you, they give you the fibre strand that's all. It is a point-point connection

"The radial distance between two sites multiplied by a routing factor of 1.4 to give the actual billable distance. DFA charges R5.00 per metre per month, on a 5 year contract"

thats not backhaul, is it?
 
Can someone explain what cable is? Is it copper? I know it is widely used in the US and you get much higher speeds over a much longer distance and it is fast enough to get TV through it. So why is it not more common?
 
dfa only supply physical fibre. Neotel supply bandwidth as well, hence the per Mbps charge

DARK Fibre Africa. I don't know their figures, but I find it very hard to believe 1mbps would be part of that equation as that is crazy expensive. If you compare that to CoCT pricing the pm/pm is already a lot higher at R5, which would make sense on a national scale.

So most likely the cost to get your own fibre pair from CT to JB would be R5*1 400 000m = R 7 000 000. Then it would just depend on what equipment you used, but minimum speed would be 1Gbps. It would make a hell of a lot more sense to use equipment to get higher speeds though considering your monthly costs.
