Fibre Router advice

Exactly why I was looking at the Ubiquiti box which has an SFP port. I know plenty about networking, but not much about physical fibre standards - except what I read about single-mode vs multi-mode fibre cable. Which gave me some concern that the SFP may not simply plug in.

Anyone using this router and specifically the SFP port with an Telkom/Openserv FFTH?
The sfp will just plug in. It's a standard. Whether your router will drive it is a different question... The sfp determines the fibre type etc, the router doesn't care as long as it understands the sfp.

I guess that then is my Q - I need to find out the fibre type, and make sure the Ubiquiti SFP supports that. It seems maybe they make multiple models, but I only saw one listed

Or just take the sfp out of the Telkom ont...

OK - I found the answer. The SFP port on the Ubiquiti is a hot-swappable port. You can plug in SM or MM adapters in depending on cable type. So the base router will work, just need to make sure I get the correct module type. Tidy!
Thanks all

Openserve wont allow you to plug directly into the fibre line, they use provisioning as well as GPON OLTs that work alongside the ONT to provide the service. There is a reason for the ONT in place as it is an endpoint for the operators network.

Darn - looks like I'll have to have some minimal footprint of their kit then. Oh well, worth it for the speed I guess. Definitely not gonna be more than absolute minimum though before it hits some decent router kit

Getting fibre next week. I have a unifi Ap already. Can I use the Ubiquiti EdgeRouterX 5-port Gigabit Router as my fibre router and power my Ap from the router? Don’t want to use the bulky router that is supplied.

That's what I'm doing. But you need to use the Ap power supply on the wan port to power the router and set eth4 to pass through the poe for the Ap. Routers power supply is then not used.

I would also be interested.
I would much rather return the router they have supplied and pay it a bit for the edge router x

Is this still the case? Upgrading my network to ubiquiti and would like to use the edge router sfp with a ufibre cpe and get rid of some clutter.
