Fibre: Secunda Community

@Swa maybe you should call your friends from Vuma and ask them to answer my email sent over a month ago. I asked them to send me their requirements for a vISP. Virtual ISP. ;)
Care to tell more about that or is it something that can't be disclosed? Vumatel uses an open access network with ISPs such an MWeb, WebAfrica and Vox providing the access.

You are unhappy with the Free Internet Option.
Not what I said though I've also said I'm not a freeloader and would pay a fair amount for a basic service where the R3600 cost of installation isn't solely my risk if the service doesn't perform. The people paying R799 where the installation is waived have nothing to lose. Hopefully your contracts are structured in a CPA compliant way that they aren't one sided.

I can understand you're in a tough position here. Mybb as usual jumped the gun and released a news story before you were ready to launch. You were still doing planning and research when that happened, the website reflects that. But you then took the opportunity and allowed sign-ups. So you're going to get questions requiring answers.

I don't know who did the research for you and developed the product marketing but perhaps just escalate that to them.

I currently pay R795 for 4/1 mb.. I'm going to pay the R1500 once off and take the 10/10 1gbps plan. So I'll wager the R1500 and still pay the same cost for Internet into the future.

@swa just be patient. We need to wait for the service to be active before we can justify the means. There are bound to be some people in Secunda that will take the R300pm x 12 option. And we will get feedback on how the service performs. Only then can the market research determine if the service will stretch beyond the 2 year guatantee.

We are both reasonably intelligent so we can conclude that bickering and trolling each other was unnecessary. I do apologise for losing my composure and responding with sarcasm. Can we discuss future topics without being destructive?

Almost got excited yesterday when I went to pta. Saw two bakkies that had no logos on with some cables on them thought it could be 123net....

@Kalin Just wondering do you guys know +- when you will start with the cables i am so exited like a kid having Christmas.

I would guess early July. That gives them 2 months till September. But keep in mind that is an estimate and not a definitive. Also they are quite busy in Umhlanga so we have to be patient. Kalin is awsome but even he cant be everywhere at once. I am also excited and find myself checking in 4 times a day for updates ;)

Thanks for creating this thread. I will be getting the free internet option. Will the R3600 once off or R300 for 12 month include everything to get connected like a modem etc?

Hi VEdeLange, yes the R3600 / R300pm includes construction as well as installation and setup of a fibre network box in your house, which can be connected to a wifi router, network hub or PC :)

@VEdelange you will need a modem with a ewan port or one with a lan port that could be switched to a ewan port to be able to connect through the fibre. Just a heads up.

So if I understand this correctly the network box converts the signal from the ISP and the ethernet port is plug and play?

The ethernet cable can then be connected directly to a wireless router/AP or directly to the pc?

I appreciate the helpful replies. Thank you. What are your thoughts on the Huawei WS319 WiFi Router? I see Webafrica bundles them with their fibre packages. But it shows wan port and not ewan.... Will it still work?

I saw some mixed reviews on takealot. I like the affordability but I kinda expect a decent wireless router/modem to go for more than R320....

On Webafrica's website I also saw this:
Q. Do I need a different router/modem?
Each Fibre provider has different requirements so potentially yes. Web Africa will tell you what you need to do on a suburb by suburb basis.

Alright so from what I understand, I will have to buy the modem/router seperately from the R3600/12x300pm payment. What would be a good modem/router to combine with 123net in Secunda. I am a total newbie :-)

What I would like to do is to connect a pc and a few cellphones via Wifi.

I was going to get telkom adsl but decided to wait for 123net. Glad they came along and saw the potential in Secunda.

@VEdeLange aimed at 123net s Fibre any wifi router will do , as all the "porting happens on their equipment that comes with all deals " all that is required from you is the wifi router that has Ethernet port and all routers should have at least one, depending on how much you will utilize your wifi from your phones lets say you copy gigs of data to your phones from your COMPUTER aim for the 300mbps wifi routers this will speed up the process, If you are using the phones to connect specifically to the internet and will not be using your Pc to transfer data to them then any wifi router will suffice as your fibre line will only be 5/1 meg, do not other think these things just remember look at what your needs are and purchase your hardware accordingly , if you need a router specify for gaming on wifi for example that's an entire different story , but speaking from experience always go with a solid cable connection for gaming, also remember to place the wifi router at a central location where you will be using your phones the most so that signal strength wont be a problem.

A cheap router that combines speed/range/ functions I would suggest a TP-Link TL-WDR3600, they go for R800 +-

@Kalin any feedback yet on the progress with the municipality ? seems that you guys are being delayed by them as no trenching has started that I can know or been inform of , starting to get worried and need some reinsurance

Not a problem , btw don't worry about different Fibre operators requirements to connect , if you are staying in Secunda I reassure you that you will not see another fibre operator laying fibre in our area during our life time.
